Wildwood Singers Present America:  A Musical Salute

Come join us as we travel the vast, exhilarating landscape of American music! You will enjoy a broad spectrum of music written by influential American composers like William Billings, Stephen Foster, and Scott Joplin to more recent musical giants in popular, classical, folk, country-western, musical theater, jazz and rock music. Black Brook ClubhouseBrook GC Receives Award

The City of Mentor's Black Brook Golf Course and Driving Range has been selected as grant recipient of the 2010 PGA Family Course Equipment Grant by the National Recreation and Park Association and The P.G.A. of America.  As one of 60 Park and Recreation agencies selected, Black Brook Golf Course will serve to build and sustain programs and opportunities to engage young people and their families, in programs that will foster increased participation in golf, environmental conservation and health and wellness.

In addition, the course has added another set of tees dedicated to senior golfers, set to open April 15. The tees will measure 5,838 yards compared to the white tees which measure 6,073 yards. The course will now have five sets of tees to accommodate every age and golfers of all abilities.

Just Kids Stuff Garage Sale

Clean out the toy boxes, closets, and attics, and get ready for the Just Kids' Stuff Garage Sale. Reserve city-owned tables beginning May 3 for residents and May 17 for nonresidents or set up your own table on a 10' x 10' space for the same fee, collected the morning of the sale. Please keep the following rules in mind when planning your sale: You may not sell out of your car, or hang items on cl
otheslines from the trees or pavilion. An adult must be present at each table. Residents should be prepared to show a current utility bill and driver's license to receive the resident rate.
Residents: $20   Nonresidents: $25.

Pitch, Hit & Run Competition
We're hosting the annual Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run Competition on Tuesday, May 4, from 3:45 - 5:30 p.m. at the Civic Center Ball fields next to Mentor High School.  This free competition is open to boys and girls who are age 7-14 as of July 18, 2010.  Players compete in three events; batting, which includes 3 swings off a batting tee, judged for distance and accuracy; pitching, which requires 6 pitches from 45 feet away to a "strike zone" target; and running, which is a timed event which will measure a competitor's speed in a sprint from second base to home plate. 
 
Participants should bring their own ball glove. No metal spikes will be allowed. Balls and bats will be provided, though competitors may also use their own bat if they choose. Winners in the local meet advance to sectionals, team, and then national finals at the All-Star Games this summer.
 
On-site registration begins at 3:45 p.m. Should it rain, the competition will be rescheduled for Thursday, May 6.

Golfers will get professional instruction and learn the proper techniques involved with the short game including chipping, pitching, and putting in this 1½ -hour class with a maximum of six students. Time to Put Your Paddles in the Water
Spring leads into summer and while the waters may still be cool, it's time to start enjoying the many paddling opportunities right here in Mentor! 

Kayaking for Beginners, a 2-hour class offered May 26, will teach you all the basics of kayaking in the safe protected waters of the Mentor Lagoons.

Paddling 101: The Right Way to Paddle a Canoe, offered May 23 from 1 - 3 p.m., will give you pointers and important safety information for safe paddling, whether you're fishing or just paddling for fun.

Join in on Mentor Day as the Indians roar into gear against the Reds in an all-Ohio battle. Ticket sales benefit City of Mentor, Mentor Top 25 and United Way of Lake County. Lake County Captainsor Appreciation Day with the Lake County Captains

Tickets: $6
Enjoy a great night of family fun and cheer with the Lake County Captains as they play the Great Lakes Loons. Activities include the ceremonial first pitch, National Anthem and on-field contests with members of the Mentor community. Help Us Walk 100-Miles In One Day

100 Mile Fun Walk
Saturday, May 22, 9 a.m.
Mentor Municipal Center
Join the Mentor Recreation Department as we kick off summer with a free, fun walk with a goal of walking a combined 100 miles together in one morning! With 100 people, it's an easy 1 mile walk. With 50 people, we'll walk 2 miles! The walk is FREE and for everyone, and your mileage that day counts toward your goal if you're participating in the Mentor in Motion Club. (Wear your 100-Mile t-shirt if you have one!) We'll also use this day as our kick-off to our new Saturday Morning Wake-Up Walks, which begin June 12. There is no cost to come out and walk with us and no registration is required. Just meet in front of the Mentor Municipal Center at 9 a.m. and join us for a fun walk! Questions? Memorial Day Walking Parade & Ceremony 
Monday, May 31
The City of Mentor will honor our military members and those who have served with a processional walk to Mentor Cemetery on Monday, May 31.  We are honored to announce that Retired Army General Dennis Lutz, will provide the Memorial Day address. General Lutz served in the U.S. Army for 34 years, retiring in September of 2009. 

Invited units will gather in the Heinen's parking lot at 9 a.m. with step-off to Mentor Cemetery scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Groups wishing to participate in the parade and/or memorial services should call the Recreation Department at (440) 974-5720 before May 7.

Lifeguard Crash Course Offered
Lifeguard
Get your American Red Cross training and learn to be a lifeguard. Students must attend all classes and pass written and practical test to receive certification. Included in the course is Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR for Professional Rescuer. Students must be 15 years old and bring proof of age to first class. The following prerequisites will be tested the first day of class. Students who do not meet these minimum requirements will not be permitted to continue with the course but will receive a refund:

1. Swim 300 yards continuously, using the strokes in the following order: 100 yards front crawl using rhythmic breathing and stabilizing propellant kick, 100 yards of breaststroke, 100 yards of front crawl and/or breaststroke. (can be a mixture of front crawl and breaststroke).
2. Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a minimum depth of 7 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim back to the starting point, keeping the face above water and holding the 10-pound object with both hands.


Class is Monday - Friday, June 14 - 18, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily at Civic Center Pool. Course fee is $185 for residents and $225 for nonresidents. Pre-registration is required. Register here or call the Recreation Department at 974-5720.
