What Every Administrator Needs to Know about MDS 3.0
As the LTC industry embraced the newly updated MDS assessment tool on October 1, 2010, many facilities took the opportunity to re-organize the team.
The introduction of new roles and responsibilities has taken some staff by surprise. The SNF managers must be aware of key factors impacting reimbursement and quality care which are driven by this tool. Although many anticipated the transition to be a daunting task, most facilities eased into the new process gracefully. Going forward there are many strategies that the MDS/PPS team can employ to continue enhancing patient care and team communication.
In addition to understanding the fundamentals of the assessment, success with MDS 3.0 requires evaluation of supporting technology. Each SNF was required to implement a technology plan to prepare for the implementation of MDS 3.0. Administrators must evaluate their current software programs to determine if the chosen product is meeting the facility's needs.
Administrators should be talking to the core management team to review and assess the following areas:
- Medicare Reimbursement
- Medicaid Reimbursement (In case mix states)
- State Survey
- Resident Interview Process
- Therapy Minute Reporting and Recording
- Therapy Refusals
- Initiation and Termination of Skilled Therapies
- Restorative Nursing Programs
- Look Back Periods
- ADL Capture and Coding
These are just a few of the major areas that impact the PPS/Case mix programs on a daily basis. Harmony will be discussing the above issues and much more during the upcoming Administrator/DON's Guide to MDS 3.0.
