From the desk of our CEO Kris Mastrangelo:
October 1, 2010 is drawing near. SNFs need to accelerate educating anyone in the home that is involved with MDS coding as well as interdisciplinary team members who participate in care planning.
MDS 3.0 will affect change across all disciplines and accordingly, will necessitate an interdisciplinary transition team including the administrator, director of nursing, MDS coordinator, therapy, social service, certified nursing assistants, dietary, as well as the business office. A starting point in laying the proper groundwork is an assessment of current internal systems and the various roles played in the process. Then, each team member can take his or her respective piece of the assessment and review it for expected change, educational, and/or process needs.
The transition from MDS 2.0 to MDS 3.0 will support the industry-wide goal of offering the best possible quality of care and quality of life for long-term care residents. By focusing increased attention on the resident, the staff will likely perceive more value in the MDS process and discover new opportunities to improve resident care. The strategies a facility uses to implement these changes will affect its financial, survey, and quality care outcomes.
One of the major goals in creating MDS 3.0 was to increase the resident's voice by introducing more resident interview items. Appendix D of the MDS 3.0 RAI Manual, "Interviewing to Increase Resident Voice in MDS Assessments," contains approaches to use to make interviews simple and more effective. Further, the manual states that if a resident needs an interpreter, every effort should be made to have one present.
Sections of MDS 3.0 that contain resident interviews:
- Cognitive Patterns - Section C
- Mood - Section D
- Preferences for Customary Routine & Activities - Section F
- Pain - in Health Conditions - Section J
- Return to Community/Overall Goals - Section Q
Harmony highly recommends that facilities provide education and training to the interdisciplinary team regarding the interview process through review of the instructions CMS has provided in the new MDS 3.0 RAI manual. Additionally any foreign language interpreters that the facility is planning to use should be educated on this process as well.
