MDS 3.0; Coding Cognitive Patterns
If you have not read the new RAI Manual for MDS 3.0 chapters published on the CMS website, you still have plenty of time. In reading chapter 3 you will find significant changes to coding instructions. Section C: Cognitive Patterns now requires facilities to determine whether the BIMS should be conducted. The BIMS (Brief Interview for Mental Status) found on page C-2 of the RAI Manual for MDS 3.0 should be conducted if the resident can respond verbally or by writing out the answers. The RAI manual warns that without an attempted structured cognitive interview, a resident may be mislabeled based on appearance or assumed diagnosis. Facilities need to coordinate assessments of cognitive function with occupational and speech therapy team members when a patient is identified as having a cognitive barrier to communication or independence with daily task completion.
Harmony will be presenting a one hour webinar this month to discuss treatment strategies and goal setting for addressing cognitive impairment for the interdisciplinary team. See details below.
The manual is in a zipped format. If you are unable to open the file, please contact Harmony for assistance.
