Alternative Approaches for Therapy Treatments

One of the most frequent questions Harmony is asked considers "what alternative treatment approaches are safe, effective and recommended for the elderly population in the SNF setting?"  As part of the treatment program, a core strengthening program is vital.  While senior adults rarely engage in the use of exercise equipment and free weights, a customized treatment program must find creative ways in which to strengthen the core naturally. With the use of programs such as Tai Chi, Pilates and Yoga, this core strengthening may be rather simple to achieve.

Of the many fitness programs for seniors, Pilates may provide the greatest health benefit. Because Pilates focuses on core muscle strengthening, improving muscle alignment and promoting mobility within the spine, seniors benefit greatly from this type of program. In fact, after engaging in Pilates exercises for a few weeks, there can be a marked improvement in posture and an increase in joint stability. Incorporated into programs that engage breathing exercises, and the use of traditional resistance and balance exercise, the perfect program may provide for a greater motivation in the senior adult's attendance and compliance in the program.

Joseph Pilates, the inventor of Pilates, took ideas and influences and merged it altogether into one. Influences ranged from the popular Yoga exercise from India, the Zen of the Buddhists and combined physical exercises from the Roman and Greek empire. People down the dates of history have already formulated and combined different body activities on how to maintain a healthy physical life.

This type of strengthening is very appropriate for patients who need to undergo a therapy program due to injury and eventually should incorporate this exercise into their daily regimen. Pilates was designed as well to repair tissues in a speedy process.

It isn't only the soft tissues of the body that gets the benefit from any sort of Pilates exercises. The main support of the body which is the spine and other limbs of the body are improved and can be the main reason why elder people may feel better for doing this exercise in a regular routine. Back problems and osteoporosis that affects our elders can be helped by doing Pilates.

Pilates isn't just for the people who want to be fit and trim but it was also designed especially for people who need extra help with recovery.  Pilates exercises are designed to be performed in most settings even right in the patient's own home.

Many therapy professionals are skeptical and ponder what about the really old people? The ones whose ages range from 60s to 70s to 80s. There have been studies done regarding Pilates exercises on elderly people and it proves to be positive even for them. The main benefits that this elder population can reap from doing a regular Pilates exercise is a sturdy (spine) back and improved balance. This makes them one step farther from falling. Another is simply the fact that osteoporosis can be prevented. A regular Pilates exercise can improve posture of older people.

Therapy managers and Rehab Professionals need to continually update their approaches to treating this extremely challenging population.  This and other handling techniques for the unique SNF population will be discussed in depth at the upcoming seminar scheduled for September 19, 2008 at Harmony University.  In addition to Therapy Techniques, the speakers will address GOAL SETTING and NOTE WRITING to Support Medicare Part A and Part B skilled services using these approaches.
