Notes from the desk of our CEO Kris Mastrangelo

                  Rehab Minute Mapping: Part I

Does your therapy department consistently map out therapy minutes for each discipline once the treatment plan is established?  Often times a lower RUG category yields on a PPS MDS assessment due to mismanagement of therapy minutes or missing an additional few minutes needed for a higher Rehab RUG.  The actual RUG score will not be representative of the level of care provided.

Strategies for Therapy Minute Management:

         1.  Anticipate the amount of therapy minutes a resident
will need on a daily basis.

         2.  Target minutes for the most appropriate rehab category.

         3. If a resident received only 15 minutes of therapy when
(s)he should have received 30 minutes, it is then important
for therapy to make up the lost time the next day or invite
another discipline to assist if appropriate.

         4. Patients who are able to tolerate 45 minutes of therapy will
likely be able to tolerate an additional 5 minutes per day for
50 minutes or an additional 15 minutes for 60 minutes of
treatment, thus deeming them a Rehab Ultra High
             candidate.

         5. Therapists should devise treatment strategies to help the
resident meet Care Plan goals; for example,    groups and concurrent therapy sessions.

         6.  Map out minutes for all covering therapists and weekend
              staff on Friday.

Communication is a key factor in successful Rehab Case Management.  Next week's Harmony Newsletter will continue to discuss case management strategies.
