Greetings!
I have been practicing Elder Law and Estate Planning for many years helping families navigate the long term care system, save money on taxes, probate and long term care and encouraging our clients to help us help them. During all of these years, I have found it most fulfilling, if not frustrating, to help those with a family member with dementia. Additionally, the number of clients I have with Alzheimer's, or some other form of dementia, is increasing rapidly.
The needs of dementia patients are countless. These clients have a long life expectancy and the caregiving issues and the costs involved are tremendous. Decision making around placement and other residential decisions produces untold guilt. Most caregivers have little or no local support system for a person who may live with a horrendous illness for 10 years or more.
Our office has always been guided by the idea of plan and protect. Whether we protect against creditors, nursing home costs, taxes or the troubled child, we are always planning and protecting. Sometimes our clients have great wealth to protect, others less; whatever needs protecting is the fortune of each family. We certainly plan on continuing to plan and protect all of our clients and families.
However, with an Alzheimer's or dementia patient, the demands of the family go beyond protecting assets. Our office has been providing our clients with a "value added" by assisting not only with legal issues but guiding on decision making, referrals to allied professionals and generally being home base for families. With the epidemic of Alzheimer's, we see this as even more important than ever. We are positioning our office as the only Elder Law office devoted to Alzheimer's Planning. Our office cannot ignore the elephant in the rooms of our families.
We recognize that many of our clients need our help to get help! They trust us as their trusted advisor to help them do Alzheimer's planning. It is based on our advice that they will seek outside help from someone we recommend. It is impossible for us to serve our clients alone, nor do we want to. On the contrary, now more than ever we need all of our support system, all of you, to help our families cope with this terrible illness.
We will be launching a new website soon which provides more information on Alzheimer's planning. Look for our new website launch announcement and visit us frequently at www.florida-elderlaw.com and often thereafter as we will be constantly updating it. Please also visit http://alzheimersresourcekit.com/reiterfeld to download your Alzheimer's Resource Kit, also updated often.
I look forward to working with all of you on this journey. Please feel free to contact me if you feel you can be a special resource for our families.
Sincerely, |
