Greetings!
To complete our Elder Care Journey during "Long Term Care Planning Month", let's pretend we never have to make the journey at all! We live to the ripe old age of 107, fully competent and physically fit and die in our sleep. Wouldn't that be wonderful?!
Yes, this is a fairy tale and is not how life works. Long Term Care Planning is a very important component of peace of mind during the aging process.
But . . . we can do some things that can make the aging process easier. Since our office has so many Alzheimer's clients and because we do so much Alzheimer's Planning, help put us out of business by doing some of the things that prevent the onset of this terrible disease.
Firstly, Alzheimer's is not a normal byproduct of aging and can often be avoided. Here are the easiest (albeit strange) things we can all be doing (of course, check with your doctor first!): -
Don't shy away from antibiotics. There is some proof that they may protect the brain. Since the effect is temporary, don't take them just to avoid Alzheimer's.
-
Ask questions about anesthesia. Some studies show that they accelerate the onset of dementia and Alzheimer's.
-
Have your eyes checked. Good vision throughout life and in our golden years can cut the chances of dementia by more than 50%.
-
Surf the internet and stimulate your brain.
-
Drink fruit juices. Compelling research from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville shows that the risk of Alzheimer's plummeted 76 percent in people who drank fruit or vegetable juice more than three times a week, compared to those who drank juice less than once a week.
-
Socialize. This reduces your risk in half. Living with someone? Even better!
-
Take care of your teeth. Gum disease emits inflammatory agents that are toxic to brain cells
-
Put vinegar on everything. It help control high cholesterol, high blood pressure and other diseases that are linked to dementia.
