Alice's Reflections on Columbus Day | |
|
Greetings!
My goal for today was to wish you all a Happy Columbus Day and to find meaning in Columbus Day that applies to the lives of all of us and particularly the senior community. My research on Columbus and his "discovery" of America, however, has led me down a very different path. So, here are my discoveries . . .
Truth: Columbus did not discover America; the Vikings did 500 years before! Columbus just got better public relations AND had some heavy duty backing: Queen Isabella of Castile!
Lesson: Don't believe everything you read or hear. Always check your facts!
Truth: A lot of the information on Columbus that we learned in the third grade has been disputed of late. The idea that Columbus "discovered" a portion of the world that had already been inhabited by native people for thousands of years is simply unfair and inaccurate. Even the name "America" is attributed to another Italian explorer, Amerigo Vespucci, who sailed long before Columbus. He even got credited with revealing the earth was round, not flat, a fact already known by many Europeans.
Lesson: What we once knew as a sure thing, can actually change.
Truth: When Christopher Columbus sailed out of the harbor back in 1492 he was simply trying to win the race to discover new trade routes for Spain. He made some major miscalculations in his voyage. He grossly underestimated the size of the earth. He assumed that by traveling west he would end up in the East Indies, the islands off Southeast Asia. Once he landed, Columbus intended to bring the highly desirable Asian spices and silks back to Europe.
Lesson: Yes, he did not go the right way, nor did he find what he set out to. He realized his mistake, but kept moving on! In spite of these revelations, we will always think of Columbus as the hero taking the consummate "Journey".
Truth: Today's seniors are on a journey too! It's the "Long Term Care Journey." And eventually, we will all take this journey.
Be sure and check back next Monday for more on the "Long Term Care Journey". But, in the meantime, think on what you can discover today that will make the lives better for our families, our clients, our senior community. What truths can we uncover on the myths set by others? What lessons can we learn from these "mistakes" and not repeat them? What do we think we know about elder law that really is mistaken or "used to be" right? What myths are we relying on in planning for long term care needs?
Food for thought on this venerable holiday. Happy Columbus Day! Sincerely, Alice Reiter Feld |
