Grandma is in a Nursing Home

Greetings!

This month we celebrated National Grandparent's Day. It was "invented" by a West Virginia woman for two main purposes:
  • As a way to champion the cause of the lonely elderly in nursing homes;
  • And for grandchildren to tap into the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide.
Surprisingly, the average age for grandparents in this country is 48! So for those of you who are grandparents, modern, active and wired, you enjoyed your day with the 72% or the grandparents who think being a grandparent is the single most important and satisfying thing in their life.

I would imagine that this doesn't change as our grandparent's age. I was less than 5 when I lost the last of my grandparents so I never had the joy of being a grandchild. This joy does not have to end when Grandma is living in a facility, has Alzheimer's disease or doesn't even know who you are. It's still joy, just a different type.

Here are some tips for visiting an elderly family member living in a communal setting:
  • Look beyond the physical appearance of the residents. Think about their life, experience; look at photos and mementos.
  • If Great-grandma had dementia, talk about the old days, listen to "her" music, and have her show you her things. Even a person in late stages will react well to a kind touch and soothing words.
  • Bring the Kids! Don't be afraid of what they'll see. Past generations grew up with multi-generational families where aging, illness, dying and death were part of life. They still are. Prepare the kids beforehand on what they'll see and what to expect.
  • Explain that they may not remember some things. Have children sing songs and help out with care giving.
  • Show up at a good time for the resident and the facility.
My parents, 88 and 89 do not live in a facility although they have a full time live in aide. They treasure their time with their grandchildren, who both live up north, and always tell me when one of them has called.  My niece and my son do not like that their grandparents are old and frail. But they deeply enjoy their history, stories and experiences. My son is the only one who ever got my father to speak about his experiences in Europe during WWII. What a gift for both of them. Maybe yours can give you the same.
