A week does not go by when the topic of placement in an Assisted Living Facility (ALF) isn't discussed in my office. Clients tend to lump all "communal" living into one category, generally called a "home". Sometimes they think and ALF's and Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) are the same thing. Some people think an Independent Living Facility is the same thing as an ALF!
It can be very confusing for clients and their families. We always take the time to explain the different levels of care, to discuss the advantages of staying home vs. the other alternatives, and discuss the costs of each. We also ask our families not to get hung up on the type of facility, but rather, what do we need and what does the facility have to offer based on needs and financial abilities.
It is important to know the difference when discussing the financial realities since in order to qualify for Veteran's or Medicaid benefits, the client must be living in either an AFL or SNF, not an independent living facility.
If you were not aware that public benefits can pay for a substantial portion of an ALF, please feel free to contact us. We can get thousands of dollars per month for our clients. The key is proper planning, as early as possible, with a trained and experienced elder law attorney.
