Is your brain aging healthy? | |
|
Greetings!
September is Healthy Aging Month! This is the time to focus on the positive aspects of growing older. It was created by the Educational Television Network, as a piggy back to "back to school", since summertime is over (In most of our country, that is!) and people are getting started on new tasks after the summer. (For more information about "Healthy Aging Month" visit healthyaging.net.)
Part of healthy aging is keeping your mind sharp. Doing so can have all kinds of beneficial effects. For example, preliminary tests at Yeshiva University College of Medicine show evidence that a sharp mind enhances focusing, planning, organizing and problem solving.
This may seem somewhat obvious. So what makes this test special? Improving and sharpening the mind also made the seniors in the study walk faster and better.
That certainly made me take notice and it hit close to home. My mother, who is 88 years old, has some mobility issues which are not "physical" but rather as a result of brain functioning.
These findings could have important implications for my mother and others like her since the frail elderly are often in poor health and unable to participate in physical exercise. Opting for brain fitness programs could provide a useful and powerful alternative.
Think I can get my mother to try it? Probably not, but I'll give it a whirl!
Sincerely, Alice Reiter Feld |
