Greetings!

My Parents can't go to their only granddaughter's wedding. This last hospitalization and rehab of my father was the final straw in a heap of straws keeping my parents from making a long trip.

Wait a minute.  We've made hotel and plane reservations. My parents bought a dress and tux. We've arranged for an additional aide when we got to NY. We arranged for rental of wheelchairs. They were looking forward to walking down the aisle, walkers and all. This is not fair.

There's a Yiddish expression: "Man plans, God laughs". And so he has. Despite how much my parents want to go, no matter how disappointed their bride/granddaughter is, they cannot go.They cannot travel anymore. Anyone in the family that wants to see "Aunt Rose and Uncle Joe" will have to visit them in Florida. They are 88 and 89 years old and deserve to see their granddaughter get married but they won't.

But the decision for my parents to not travel to the wedding  was not made solely based on their disabilities. It was made with the reality that any medical incident could ruin the wedding. It was made with the reality that this was too much responsibility for me as a care giver. It was made with the reality that they were in a state of decline.

And so my point is: Care giving is not just about the senior. I often hear clients say, "My mother doesn't want to move into a facility." My answer is always the same. We must do what is best for the whole family, not just the senior. The needs of the care givers and family must all be considered along with the needs and wants of the senior. These are not easy decisions and I suppose they shouldn't be. We are talking about important decisions.

And so now I must give myself my own advice.  For the sake of all, my parents must stay home. I don't like the decision. It was difficult to make. It's a heartbreaking decision. But it is the right one.

Topic:
Protect yourself by protecting your client

What can be more devastating for a family than trying to navigate the long term health care system alone, with no experience, help or advocacy? The answer to this seemingly rhetorical question is that professionals such as yourself work every day to try to help families through these hard times. But we all know that the system doesn't always work. It's not your fault! Nonetheless, families take their frustration out on you. And you put your reputation and livelihood on the line.

Learn how to protect yourself by giving the families the information they need, want and appreciate. Be informed and educated on how to give good advice on elder law issues, when not to give advice and learn the truth about Medicaid, Veteran's Benefits and long term care planning.

This is an exciting topic and we will fill up quickly. Call now as seating is limited.

       Important Upcoming Workshop Reveals:

Are You Caring for a Loved one with Alzheimer's Disease?
The 9 Steps You Need to Be Taking to Provide the Best Possible Care
for Your Loved One AND Protect Your Family's Finances.

If you are worried about a loved one who has shown some memory loss or has already been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, I'm sure you have important concerns:
  • How do I get the best care for my loved one?
  • How do I find the strength to cope with an illness that can last
    more than 10 years?
  • Will the costs of care mean we lose everything to Alzheimer's?
Of course, everyone should see a qualified physician to rule out any other causes of
dementia. But once that is done, there are several
crucial steps on the legal and
financial side
that should be considered immediately. That's because the cost of
care for someone with Alzheimer's is incredibly expensive. Studies show that the
average Alzheimer's patient will need almost $200,000 for the cost of long term
care needs during their lifetime. Most people cannot afford $4000 per month for an
Alzheimer's ALF or $6500 per month for a nursing home.

Florida law requires that the Alzheimer's patient have enough capacity to make planning decisions. That's why we suggest you act right now. The longer you wait the greater the risk.

Join our workshop where we discuss real world issues faced by people like you:
  • Learn the biggest mistakes families make and how to avoid them.
  • What can I expect during each of the stages of Alzheimers?
  • How to cope with the effects of this devastating disease?
  • How do I handle medical, legal and living decision making?
  • What financial resources are available to pay for long term care needs?
  • How can my family member qualify for Medicaid or Veteran's Benefits?
  • How can I protect their assets from the costs of long term care needs and not run out of money?

Topic:
Protect Yourself by Protecting Your Client's Assets

Helping your client prepare for the costs of long term care needs is critical in times where people are living longer and requiring greater care. The costs can be astronomical.

Clients rely on their financial planners to discuss all the issues that may come before them. Failure to address long term care needs does a great disservice to your clients. This is not good for your reputation and can even open you up to liability.

HOWEVER, we can help you protect yourself and put an iron cage around your clients and help solve the retention problems you face when your senior citizen dies.

Join us as we talk about how the recent changes in the Medicaid laws virtually insures that you will continue to manage the family's assets so long as you do a good job . . . and enhance your value to all of your clients by addressing all of the issues that are important to them.

Dear Alice,

First we would like to thank you and your staff for your assistance in securing Medicaid approval for my father, Richard P. Shaw, once again. Your office's expertise and connections have been invaluable to us in our hour of need.

We would especially like to tell you that Ada has been very thorough and attentive to detail in all aspects of my father's Medicaid applications. She was the one who straightened out the initial application and finally got an answer on what months were covered and what months were not. Also, Ada was very expedient in our newest challenge with the Department of Children and Families' - the annual review. She contacted us immediately upon receipt last week of the annual Medicaid renewal application and told us what information and documents we needed to gather to complete it. She also obtained a desperately needed extension as they were asking for submittal on DECEMBER 14TH!!!! only a week from receipt of the renewal form. Ada's connections with the Dept. of Children and Families were very valuable in obtaining the extension and expediting the annual Medicaid renewal. In fact, the whole process has been completed today with as little stress on my mother and me as Ada could provide.

Ada has been a pleasure to work with and we would highly recommend her services. She conducts herself in a professional and friendly manner that puts your mind at ease. We look forward to working with her again.

Thanks again for all you do and Happy Holidays!
Sincerely,
Mary Ann Shaw and Rose Mary Shaw

Dear Alice,
Seldom do I have a chance to thank and praise the work that you and your staff do for your clients of which I am fortunately one of those lucky folks. The care and consideration your staff has shown to Joan and I have been exceptional. The stress and strain of being a caregiver for so long had taken a toll on me but you guys have taken all the worry and concern off my 85 year old shoulders. I would like to pay a particular complement to Ada, whose pleasant attitude and genial demeanor has made this part of our lives so much easier to bear. You are indeed lucky and wise to have assembled such a competent staff .Again thank you for helping us in this difficult time of our lives.

Ada,
Just wanted to let you know, I truly appreciate the effort you have put forth for me regarding this situation of trying to establish a new lower payment for my dad for calendar year 2009. You have kept me up to date on all the developments that have transpired involving the DCS, and that has been most comforting. I must say in the 2 years I have been associated with your law firm, I have been extremely pleased with everything Alice and you have done form me. My gut instinct was to choose your law firm because of Alice's ties to New York, and I was absolutely correct.
Thanks again,
Jeff Arbeit
