The Legacy of Senator Ted Kennedy

Greetings!

"To care for him
who shall have borne the battle
and for his widow, and his orphan"

Abraham Lincoln, now the motto of the Office of Veteran's Affairs.

When a famous person dies, I often look at what their life can teach us.  Terry Schiavo taught us to do advance planning and have all our advance directives in order.  Michael Jackson taught us that despite incredible inner turmoil, it is essential to prepare a good will, cover all bases and make competent and wise decisions concerning children and assets.  Anna Nicole Smith taught us that having a "writing" naming who should make funeral and burial decisions for us is important and that preneed plans may not be enough.

Senator Kennedy gave us much during his lifetime.  Much of it has been repeated incessantly on news shows over the weekend.  I would like to point out to you a few lesser known contributions that the senator leaves as a legacy.

As you know, Veteran's Benefits is a particular specialty of mine and I teach about the Aid and Attendance benefit for long term care to clients, as well as allied professionals such as social workers, ALF administrators etc.

Did you know that Senator Kennedy:
  • Introduced legislation reducing the personal costs for military families such as paying for moves and providing government jobs to the spouse at home;

  • Won passage of the National Military Child Care Act establishing a Dept. of Defense child care system, considered one of the best in the country;

  • Worked during the Iraq war to guarantee effective vehicle armor and body armor for our troops to protect them from the explosive devices.  In 2003 he secured over $1 billion in funding for this effort.  Again, in 2005 the Senate Armed Forces committee, of which Senator Kennedy was a member, added nearly $835 million to this cause.

  • In 1991, worked toward and helped attain the repeal against women serving as combat aviators, allowing women a complete role in our military.

  • As late as 2008, championed the Wounded Warrior legislation in response to the alarming statistics of suicides in the armed forces and the last of adequate mental health care.
I hope that all of us, regardless of our political leanings, can take pride in this legacy and can continue, in the spirit of Abraham Lincoln,  to work to provide necessary and well deserved benefits for our veterans and their families.

Sincerely,

To whom it may concern:
I have been dealing with the law firm of Alice Reiter Feld since June of 2008 regarding the health care of my father. They have been knowledgeable and responsive in the issue of eldercare and always have time for me when I call. I am managing my fathers care from a long distance and they make a difficult task very manageable.
I would recommend this firm to anyone with an elder care question or concern.  They know the ropes of a difficult and confusing issue with many pitfalls and can advise you how to navigate a very trying time in any family.
Sincerely,
Marilyn Jenney

Dear Alice,
It was a little over a year ago when I was given your name and number by my Income Tax man. I was alone, filing a joint return, and my husband home, unable to participate in what had been his responsibility up until then. My husband and I had, for a few years, covered up his "memory loss" and I could not hide his condition any longer. We were alone, isolated (our own fault) and I did not know where to turn. That step, calling your office, saved us both. We had no idea of where to begin, how to navigate "the system" etc.
Thanks to your compassionate, caring, knowledgeable staff; under the kindest, sharpest, most energetic, hands on guidance from you, a year later we are seeing the "light at the end" and my husband is happy in his care. He is where he belongs! Thanks to you all!
