Watch your ElderSpeak!

As it turns out, the way we speak to our elders can be detrimental to their health!

According to researchers, innocent sounding terms such as "sweetie" or "dear" are insulting to older individuals. These are considered "diminutive" terms to an elderly person and can have a negative impact on their self worth.

In a recent NY Times article, a study at Yale found that older people who were told they were "forgetful" or "shaky" began to perform worse on memory and balance tests and showed higher degrees of stress. The researchers concluded that these types of denigrating insults lead to negative images of aging and to worsening functional health, including lower survival rates.

The lesson is that "young lady" or "good girl" should be reserved for the young.  We all react better when we are treated respectfully, the elderly included.

I wish to take this opportunity to talk about Attorney Alice Reiter Feld's discussion with our Bermuda Club Herzl Judea Hadassah Chapter.

The topics of discussion were "How to Manage Long Term Care" and "The Health Care System".

Our Hadassah Chapter is appropriately called a "Senior" Chapter. The majority of our members are between the ages of 75 to 95 plus years. They thoroughly enjoyed Attorney Feld's presentation, as they are facing many decisions that must now be made (or have already made) regarding their health care. Attorney Feld was thorough, addressed all major points, was very interesting, and patiently answered all of our member's questions. They LOVED her!!

We are looking forward to her returning to our Chapter to discuss pertinent health care issues. Our ladies have loads of questions for her.

Sincerely,
Irma Gordon, President
Bermuda Club Herzl Judea Hadassah Chapter

Dear Alice,

Hope this note finds you well this Thursday before the 4th of July. Wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for inviting me to the presentations that your office makes available to our community. Every presentation that I have been at is well prepared and presented and has timely subjects of need to many of us in the general community, as well as the non-profit world. After attending the program on Health Care Decisions, found that the program wan not only timely but also a good venue to network with other folks within the community of speakers, whom we rarely have the chance to interface with. On behalf of both myself personally, and our community, keep up the great work and please keep us informed of these presentations and workshops.

Sincerely Yours,
Paul Keefe
