Annual report_08 The Annual Report is a critical milestone in the life of every nonprofit organization.  Once each year we have the opportunity to communicate with our supporters, funders, families and community members about what we've been doing and what's next on the organizational agenda.  We are pleased to share with you our 2008 Annual Report, now available for viewing on our Web site.  If you would like a printed copy, please give us a call.  Thanks for your support!

Invitation to Participate in Marriage Study
Contributed by Danielle Jackson, AZA Member

My name is Danielle Jackson and besides being a mom to Noah, who is on the spectrum, I am also working on getting my PhD in human communication. Part of that process requires me to do research. Based on my family's experiences since Noah's diagnosis, I have decided to research marriage and sibling relationships in families of children with an ASD.  If you are currently married or living with your partner, I hope you will be kind enough to help me by taking 15 minutes to complete an anonymous survey about your family relationships.  Your participation might not directly benefit you, but it will help us better understand relationships in families with children who have an ASD.  In addition, your participation has the potential to help develop ways to support couples and families experiencing life with a child on the spectrum and related issues.  To participate in the study, please go to the website listed below.  By taking the survey you consent to participate.  Thank you for your support and help!

Attend the AZ Autism Coalition Conference
Coalition logo This Saturday, October 10th, the Arizona Autism Coalition will host their first annual conference here at the Disability Empowerment Center of Arizona.  This year's theme is "Insurance 101" - everything you need to know about claims and payments, for parents and providers of all therapies.  In addition, the afternoon agenda includes 3 panels of local experts to talk about general autism issues and insights.  These include a Doctors' Panel, a Clinicians' Panel, and a Community Contributors' Panel.  Attendance for families is only $25, and includes a one-year membership to the coalition!  Employees who attend can receive credit for AZA professional development.  See www.azautism.org for more information, or plan on attending the conference from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm this Saturday at 5025 E Washington St, Phoenix.

Good news!  You can find gluten, casein, soy, egg, and sugar free desserts that are absolutely delicious!  Just try Innocent Indulgence in Tempe, where owner and Chef, Alisha Chasey has mastered the art of creating healthy desserts that are packed with plenty of taste and nutrition.  Love Chocolate?  Try the Double Fudge Cheesecake or the Fudge Brownie Squares.  Craving Cheesecake?  Take your pick from Raspberry Bliss or Lemon Island.  Hungry for a Halloween treat?  Sample the pumpkin patch parfait or Spiced Apples and Maple Crème.  As a Certified Nutrition Specialist and Registered Dietitian, Alisha believes in the healing power of nutrition.  Fortunately for her customers, she knows how to deliver that healing power with mouth-watering desserts that are just plain yummy!  Take a moment to check out her creations at innocentindulgence.net  or call (602) 509-0744.

Join the AZA Girl Scouts Troop
Girl scouts AZA United is forming a girl scouts troop!  Our plan is to meet monthly here at the Disability Empowerment Center and provide a goal-oriented supportive environment for girls scouts activities.  This could be a great social opportunity and is intended for girls ages 5 to 12.  If you are interested in having your child join the troop, or if you'd like to volunteer to help make it a success, please contact Kimberly Crook, our Community Relations Facilitator, by calling our office, or reach her by email at kimberly@azaunited.org.  We are still in the planning stages, so now is a great time to get involved and help make this program a success for all.

Online Classes for AZA Employees and Families
Online classes AZA United is now offering online professional development classes.  Topics include understanding autism, establishing yourself as an effective interventionist, positive behavioral supports, PRT, visual supports, and more.  For more details, see our full listing of available courses.  Each of these is offered at the amazingly low rate of only 10 dollars.  Employees may sign up for a class to fulfill professional development hours, or simply to increase knowledge and skills.  Parents are also welcome to sign up for any of these classes.  To do so, please call our office or send an email to info@azaunited.org with your name and preferred class.

New Parent Information Sharing Sessions
Parent meeting AZA United is now preparing a new monthly event, Parent Information Sharing Sessions.  These get-togethers will be an opportunity for parents to mix and mingle while addressing common issues.  Parents will be able to share what they know or have found to work, as well as ask questions and get ideas from each other.  Each meeting will have guest speakers to present information and help parents problem-solve particular challenges they are facing.  Some themes that are already in the works include family dynamics, sibling support, special needs trusts, navigating state systems, being a good user of services, staying organized, interacting with professionals, improving challenging behaviors, expanding your child's diet, toilet training, and transitioning into teenage years and adulthood.  If you are interested in attending or participating as a speaker, please contact us by phone or email us at parents@azaunited.org.  Dates will be announced soon!

Thanks for all you do, and don't forget to tell us what else we can do...for you!
