Working for the Best AZA United was recently honored by the Phoenix Business Journal as one of the Best Places to Work in the Valley! To celebrate, we are gearing up for a Spring Staff Party for all employees and we want to hear your ideas. How can we make this the best early evening of your life? Suggestions so far include a Wii tournament and of course some door prizes for those who show up on time (a highly desired Habilitator behavior). But why stop there? With this award in hand it's on us to live up to the hype, and on that note we are excited to announce a new Pay Rate Model that will take effect February 1st, with an increased ceiling rate of $14.25 per hour for Habilitation! Details will be sent out soon to all employees and families of AZA United. Stay tuned everyone, the fun is just beginning. Thanks for being a part of AZA United!

Attend the New ABA Training A new year, a new building and a new ABA Training - it's all happening at AZA United. On Saturday, January 31st, our monthly ABA Training class resumes with a new and improved version. This training is open to all community members, and employees of AZA United can get a raise for attending and passing the test, even if you have attended another ABA Training with us in the past. Parents and family members are welcome to attend for free, and all others may register for $25. If you can't make it this time, have no fear - this will be a regularly offered training. For more information or to sign up, contact us.

Visit our New Website Surf on over to our recently revised website at www.AZAunited.org. Some of the highlights include available services, job opportunities, archived newsletters, and a variety of downloads including timesheets, reports, and logbook materials. The biggest addition, though, is a login feature for families and employees who would like to take advantage of our new online timesheet system. Tired of fiddling with that old fax thing-a-ma-jig? We've got the answer! If you are interested in making the switch to online timesheets, contact us for more information.

Save the Date for the Grand Opening Mark your calendars for Friday, February 20th, to visit AZA United's new home at the Grand Opening for the Arizona Disability Empowerment Center! This event will last all day and be open to the public. Our office includes two observable clinic rooms and a Community Resource Library for families, employees and professionals in the field. The DEC is a state-of-the-art building created by Arizona Bridge to Independent Living (ABIL) that has been designed and constructed to address the specific needs of individuals with disabilities in our community. Other organizations now residing in the DEC include Raising Special Kids and the Arizona Center for Disability Law. The building is equipped with multiple resources, including training rooms and a conference center. The building is centrally located just east of 48th Street and Washington Street in Phoenix. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Aaron Becomes a BCBA Aaron Blocher-Rubin, Executive Director of AZA United, recently passed the certification exam to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). When asked for his thoughts on this achievement, Aaron said, "It turns out I actually do know what I'm doing. Who knew?" Riddle Me This... Looking for some material to loosen up your favorite literal thinker? Check out these common idioms that are great for helping individuals on the spectrum remember that sometimes people don't really mean exactly what they say...
1. "He's got a chip on his shoulder."
Believe it or not, this guy's shoulder actually requires no medical attention! Rather, this saying refers to being upset about something that happened in the past. When someone has a chip on their shoulder they haven't quite gotten over whatever they were angry about.
2. "A penny saved is a penny earned."
This simple rule of thumb extends far beyond the obsolete penny, and is a very timely lesson given the world's current economy. Essentially it means that by not spending money, you are saving it - which can be just as good as earning it.
3. "This is a piece of cake."
Slow down! Do not take a bite. This saying means that something is very easy to accomplish, but it does not involve any frosting.
4. "It's all Greek to me."
You don't have to be bilingual to get this one. For some reason, "Greek" in this idiom means things we can't understand. No further comment.
5. "I'll do it at the drop of a hat."
When someone makes a commitment like this, you can leave your beret in the closet. All they're saying is that as soon as you ask, they willl be there! Now that's a friend worth keeping.

Two Special Thank You's We at AZA United would like to express our gratititude for two recent corporate contributions that are making a difference in helping us achieve our mission. First, we would like to thank the Gannett Foundation for awarding AZA United a grant to develop Family Starter Kits. These kits will help families get on track immediately when starting a Habilitation program for their child, without losing time as they search for the right materials and supplies. They will be distributed to underpriveleged families so that limited finances do not stop an effective program from being implemented for their child. Through this process we will be able to develop a series of model kits which we can then make available to all families on a sliding scale basis. Second, we would like to thank M&I Bank for making an end-of-year contribution to support our general programs and operations. We appreciate your support and promise to put it to good use to benefit kids and families throughout the valley in 2009!
