AZA United Moves to New Home
ABILAZA United has moved to the Arizona Disability Empowerment Center!  Our new home includes two clinic rooms and a Community Resource Library for families, employees and professionals in the field.  The DEC is a state-of-the-art building created by Arizona Bridge to Independent Living (ABIL) that has been designed and constructed to address the specific needs of individuals with disabilities in our community.  The building is equipped with multiple resources, including training rooms and a conference center.  Our new address is 5025 E Washington St, Suite 212, Phoenix, AZ, 85034.  Our new FAX number is (602) 273-9108.  The building is centrally located just east of 48th Street and Washington Street in Phoenix.  A Grand Opening and open house is tentatively scheduled for February.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Help Us Build a Center for You
Playroom As we settle in and set up shop in our new center to better serve the needs of the Arizona autism community, we need your help!  Parents, do you have therapy materials in good condition that your child no longer needs?  Donate your goods to AZA United for use in our center-based clinics and hundreds of children will benefit for years to come!  Our intention is to have materials available to implement programs and activities for children of all ages and needs, so that every visit to our center is productive and hands-on.  We will use these materials to evaluate skills, probe developmentally appropriate activities, and push home-based programming forward to maximize each child's progress.  Specific items we are looking for include flashcards, fine motor activities, object manipulation tasks, sensory items or equipment, children's furniture, games, toys and reinforcers.  Contact us if you have something to contribute!  You will receive a receipt recognizing your donation to a nonprofit organization for tax purposes.  We are also working hard to develop our Community Resource Library which will be open to anyone interested in learning about available resources or expanding their knowledge of autism.  If you have any books, videos, magazine articles or other items that others could learn from, donate them to AZA United!  Parents and habilitators will be able to broaden their understanding of the wide world of autism by visiting our library whenever it is convenient.  Looking for ideas to teach social skills?  Come watch a video on some of the latest techniques.  Need some more information about special diets?  Look over articles and books to see what others are saying.  We would also like to hear your input on what books, videos or other items should be included in the Community Resource Library.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Two Special Thank You's
Thank You We at AZA United would like to express our gratititude for two recent corporate contributions that are making a difference in helping us achieve our mission.  Goodman's Furniture helped us furnish our new office in the Disability Empowerment Center with a large shipment of top quality furniture and equipment.  With this contribution we can continue to focus our funds on quality programming and support for our children and families while giving our hard-working lead staff a functional and professional workspace to meet the needs of those we serve every day.  Thank you Goodman's!  We would also like to recognize the Build-A-Bear Foundation for awarding AZA United a grant to develop Family Starter Kits.  These kits will help families get on track immediately when starting a Habilitation program for their child, without losing time as they search for the right materials and supplies.  These kits will be distributed to underpriveleged families so that limited finances do not stop an effective program from being implemented for their child.  Through this process we will be able to develop a series of model kits which we can then make available to all families on a sliding scale basis.  Stay tuned, and thank you Build-A-Bear!  We all know times are tough, and we appreciate your recognizing that now is when the good work of nonprofits is needed most.

AZA Habilitator Wins National Award
Nina & Josh Congratulations to Nina Gerenscer, runner-up in the 2008 national Irwin Siegel Agency Direct Support Staff Recognition Award!  Read her letter of support below submitted by the parents of a child she works with:

Nina works with our son, Joshua.  She is outstanding in how she interacts with and cares for him.  She always takes the time to ensure that he is improving towards all his goals, specifically, socialization and communication.  She is extremely caring and loving with our son, yet ensures his follow-through on important skill-building activities, which is exactly what he needs.  We have noticed great improvement with him since Nina began working with him.

Nina always tries to enhance Joshua's independence.  He has his own schedule, and she ensures that he keeps it current.  He is now learning to attend to his own schedule by writing his tasks himself.  She always promotes self-esteem by praising him every time he completes a task correctly, or even when he sporadically initiates a good act.  She encourages his social skills by immersing him into different environments and introducing him to different settings within his community.

She is especially skilled at putting theory into practice beneficially for Josh.  Anytime I have difficulties in dealing with specific challenges, she helps us think of ways to conquer these challenges.  Not only is she amazing with Josh, she is simply an amazing human being.  We are all extremely proud of her!  I know that Josh will never forget her and will be a happier and more independent person throughout his lifetime because of her influence.

Thanks for all you do, and don't forget to tell us what else we can do...for you!
