Hoops for ASD a Huge Success!
Basketball Camp collage Last month AZA United hosted our first ever Basketball Camp for children on the autism spectrum!  We had over 100 people participate and enjoy the game so many of us love.  There were lay-up lines, passing games, dribbling practice and a plethora of random slam dunks on hoops of all sizes.  A big thank you goes out to Steve Lee and the Scottsdale Bible Church for hosting our event and tending to every one of our needs with care and compassion.  Another big thank you to The Bagnall Company for sponsoring the event and taking care of our equipment costs.  Let's not forget the Phoenix Suns Gorilla who made an unforgettable appearance to play some one-on-one, toss out T-shirts and sign some autographs for the fans.  Lastly, thank you to all of our enthusiastic volunteers and staff who made the day one to remember forever!  With all of this amazing support we were able to host this 2-day camp free of charge to all families and give them each a wonderful experience that we all look forward to doing again.

Making the Most of our Services
Jordan T Contributed by the Taylor Family

My son has been receiving Habilitation services for nearly two years and I have never encountered an agency like AZA United!  They have made the commitment to do whatever it takes to make my son successful.  Their team has been instrumental in helping us get the services that my son requires to have a successful ABA program by performing a free comprehensive assessment and writing a detailed report for me to submit to DDD.  Since we didn't qualify for Hab M, this made an enormous difference.  Now they are visiting us regularly to update our program and provide ongoing habilitator training and support.  AZA United also wrote a letter to our son's school offering to collaborate with his teacher and therapists to make sure we are all on the same page with his program both at home and at school.  This effort was extremely successful and our teacher has been very responsive.  Next month the whole team will meet for the first time.  AZA United has gone above and beyond any agency we have ever worked with.  If it wasn't for them, my son would not be progressing as steadily as he is!  Thank you to the whole AZA United staff!!

AZA United places no restrictions on the type or level of support offered to our families.  If you need something to boost your child's Habilitation program, just ask!

Join Us for Ice Skating!
Ice skating On Saturday, November 15th, AZA United will host an Ice Skating for ASD event at the Alltel Ice Den - that's right, the same one that the Phoenix Coyotes use to practice.  Our kids will have 5 coaches on hand to show them the ropes, or whatever it is you show when ice skating, for a full hour.  The event starts at 11:30 with check-in and skate fitting and ends at 1:00.  As usual there is no cost for member families of AZA United to participate (including parents, siblings and habilitators).  Helmets are not provided, so be sure to bring your own.  For a flyer with more information or to sign up, please contact us.  Space is limited.  Also let us know if you or your company would like to sponsor this event and help make a difference in the lives of children with autism!

AZA United is Moving!
ABILBy December, AZA United will have moved to our new home in the Arizona Disability Empowerment CenterOur phone numbers will change!  Announcements will be sent out as soon as we have our new contact information.  The DEC is a state-of-the-art building created by Arizona Bridge to Independent Living (ABIL) that has been designed and constructed to address the specific needs of individuals with disabilities in our community.  The building is centrally located just east of 48th Street and Washington Street in Phoenix.  Our new offices will include two observable clinic rooms, allowing us to provide enhanced trainings, assessments and family support services.  The building also has a number of shared spaces and resources, such as a conference room and a roofdeck with a magnificent view.  Be on the lookout for announcements about our Grand Opening, or let us know if you would like to arrange for a tour.

Parents - Update your Annual Goals
A key part of a successful Habilitation program is having updated annual goals.  As we approach the end of 2008, now is the time to contact our program staff and discuss updates to your child's goals and objectives as well as strategies for success.  AZA United will be reaching out to all of our families in January to review what we currently have on file and make the necessary updates.  However, if you would like to reach us sooner and make sure your Habilitation program targets the appropriate areas and has proper documentation for your ISP, contact us.  Updated goals will be distributed to your family, your habiliators and your DDD support coordinator.

Join the AZA Holiday Party
Snowman dancing The AZA United Family Events Committee is working on yet another fantastic family event for December - a holiday party!  Ideas so far include refreshments, a Santa photo booth, a bouncer, and a craft station to make ornaments.  However, we can't do this alone.  Parents, if you want to roll up your sleeves and make this a night to remember, join our Holiday Party Planning Team!  For more information, contact Jacqueline, chair of the Family Events Committee.  Thanks for stepping up!

Thanks for all you do, and don't forget to tell us what else we can do...for you!
