AZA United is Moving!
ABILAZA United will soon be moving to our new home in the Arizona Disability Empowerment Center, a state-of-the-art building created by Arizona Bridge to Independent Living (ABIL) that has been designed and constructed to address the specific needs of individuals with disabilities in our community.  Several other disability related organizations will also be tenants, including Raising Special Kids and the Center for Disability Law.  The building is centrally located near the airport and will be near a stop on the Light Rail.  Our new offices will include two observable clinic rooms, allowing us to provide enhanced trainings, assessments and family support services.  The building also has a number of shared spaces and resources, such as a conference room and a roofdeck with a magnificent view.  There are several naming opportunities still available for donors!  Be on the lookout for announcements about our Grand Opening, or let us know if you would like to schedule a tour.

Human Service Co-op Conference
Fed HSC logo Did you know that AZA United is part of a national movement for self-direction?  You've seen the title of our newsletter, "Co-op Culture."  Maybe you've noticed those three little words under the puzzle heart logo, "human service co-op."  Many of you have attended our annual meetings or talked to our Board members about what a co-op is and why it is so important for the future of our children and families.  In a Human Service Co-op, parents or individuals served not only have a voice, but they also have a vote.  When we determine what services we will provide, how we will provide them, and how we will obtain the necessary funding to achieve our goals, those decisions come from our Members - the families that receive our services.  Any family who joins us has that opportunity to be involved and help develop services and programs that truly meet your needs.  These are the ideals upon which the Human Service Co-op (HSC) concept was founded.  There are now three HSC's in Arizona, and several forming in other states.  All of us collectively govern and depend on the guidance of the Federated HSC to develop sustainability and collaborate amongst each other.  The Federated HSC is the national organization that furthers the mission of all HSC's and provides technical assistance as new co-ops get up and running.  Every year the Federated HSC hosts a national conference for all co-op Members and others interested in opportunities for self-determination.  The 2009 Federated HSC Conference, "Co-op Cafe," will take place this month on Friday, October 10th.  Details are available online.  Join us and learn about how the Human Service Co-op can help you prepare for your child's future!

ASU Autism Asperger's Club Events
ASU logo The ASU Autism Asperger's Club, founded by one of our star habilitators Nina Gerencscer, has two October events planned to make a difference for our community's children and families.  On Saturday, October 11th, the club will be having a car wash to raise funds on the SW corner of Rural and Guadalupe roads in Tempe.  For just a 3 dollar minimum donation, your rusty old jalopy can look like a shiny new Ferrari!  Support a great cause and get a great deal.  Later in the month, be sure to visit the club's Halloween Bash on Friday, October 24th.  This event is open to families with kids of all ages.  Lots of fun activities are on the agenda, including pumpkin bowling, apple bobbing, and a costume contest!  Space is limited, so sign up early.  The deadline is October 15th.  For more information, contact NinaIf you are an ASU student, be sure to ask how you can become a part of this fantastic club!

Join Us at the Autism Walks
Autism Walks Two of the valleys most popular autism awareness walks are coming up!  You can form your own teams or join the AZA United teams.  Each walk also serves to raise funds for different types of autism-related research.  On October 18, join us at the Phoenix Zoo for the ZooWalk for Autism.  The event starts around 8:00 am, as the doors for the zoo open early for us.  You are welcome to bring friends and family and stay after the walk for a fun day at the zoo.  On November 2nd, join us at Tempe Beach Park for Walk Now for Autism.  This fun event starts around 9:00 am and has a variety of activities and entertainment set up to enjoy before doing a walk around the internationally acclaimed Tempe Lake.  If you don't join our teams, be sure to stop by our booth to say hello and get your FREE AZA United temporary tattoo!

Save the Date for Ice Skating
Ice skating Plans are underway for another sports activity for children on the autism spectrum - ice skating!  Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 15th.  Our kids will have the ice to themselves for 2 hours at a local rink in North Scottsdale, as well as the assistance of 5 private coaches.  As usual there is no cost for member families of AZA United to participate (including parents and siblings), and habilitators are welcome to join us as well.  Anyone who would like to volunteer or sponsor this event and be part of the fun should contact us!

Thanks for all you do, and don't forget to tell us what else we can do...for you!
