Blue Day

"Born on a Blue Day" is the bestselling memoir of Daniel Tammet, a savant with Asperger's Syndrome.  See his interview from 60 Minutes that includes reciting pi to over 20,000 digits, learning the Icelandic language in 7 days, and measuring 45 grams of porridge for breakfast every day.

New E Joins the Team
New E AZA United is pleased to welcome our newest member of the team, Ehren Werntz, who steps into the role of Program Manager.  Ehren's responsibilities will include designing and updating habilitation programs, providing ongoing training and support to families and habilitators, leading training classes and workshops, and supervising our Habilitation Specialists.  Ehren has a degree in Special Education and is a certified teacher with the Arizona Department of Education.  He has been working in the field of autism treatment for 6 years.  His experience includes three years as the teacher & director of two autism programs at Tempe Middle Schools, director of a previous Summer Enrichment Program, and two years as a consultant/trainer for parents, therapists and teachers.  Ehren is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Psychology and completing requirements to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).  He has provided training and worked one-to-one with hundreds of children with autism, families and therapists.  Since we already have an Aaron on staff, Ehren will be referred to as "New E."  However, only New E is permitted to call the existing Aaron "Old A."  These are nicknames given to us years ago by one of our brilliant kiddos, and they've never gotten old.  Or new.  Never mind.

Need help with your child's Habilitation program?  Contact Ehren.
Now Hiring: Bilingual Coordinator
Jobing AZA United is now accepting applications for a new position, the "Bilingual Outreach and Service Coordinator."  The primary responsibility for this job is overseeing the service coordination system to match our Habilitation and Respite providers with families in need of services.  Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish is required.  To view the online job posting, visit our profile on Jobing.com or contact us and request a Job Description.
GFCF Cooking, Part II: East Valley
GFCF Cooking Following up on a successful May family event, we are hosting another GFCF cooking class for AZA United families on July 12th.  This class will take place in Gilbert in the home of one of our wonderful families.  We will host a final GFCF class in the west valley in the coming months.  Many families have experimented with gluten-casein free diets for their children, often reporting effects such as improvements in social attention and eye contact, as well as decreases in self-stimulatory behaviors and irritability.  However, any family who has tried it will tell you one thing: it's not easy!  Not to worry, though - our professional chef will demonstrate how to cook a few delicious dishes and have many more for you to sample.  You'll have a chance to ask your own questions and collect some recipes to make your GFCF experience a great one.  Space is limited and reserved for Member families only, so RSVP early!  Also let us know if you or your company is interested in being a sponsor for this event.
Visual Support Workshops are Back!
visual schedule Join us at the AZA United main office in Tempe on July 23rd from 10 am to 2 pm, as we host a workshop for families and employees to help you make visual supports for your child.  Our library has grown and we have a wide range of samples to show you.  These include daily schedules, token boards, communication systems, activity boards, power cards, social stories and more.  Visuals...is there anything they can't do?  Space is limited, so contact us to sign up!  Although we'll be available to help during the whole 4-hour period, you are welcome to attend as much or as little of the workshop as you need.
Habilitator of the Year Awards
Award Irwin Siegel Agency Inc., a national liability insurance firm that specializes in human service and nonprofit organizations, is now accepting nominations for the annual Direct Support Staff Recognition Award.  This national award will honor three individuals that have made a significant difference in the life of the child, teen or adult that they support through their work.  Parents, if you have a Habilitation provider that is deserving of this honor, submit your nomination and tell us why they deserve to receive this prestigious award.  Winners will receive $500, a commemorative certificate and recognition in a variety of national publications.  We believe everyone who dedicates themselves to this field deserves an award, so let's take advantage of this opportunity to give one.
Holy Hot Press Laminator!
Laminator AZA United has officially gone mad.  We all know how valuable a good set of visual supports can be in helping a child communicate and navigate through the day.  Yet what good is a support that cannot support itself?  Enter the laminator...  For years we have watched ourselves and others spend countless hours rolling and cutting thousands of little pictures through a handheld laminator, only to find that our scissors don't work anymore from all the glue, the lamination falls apart if you don't leave a border, and the all-important Velcro doesn't stick to the finished product!  Finally we said, "Enough is enough."  AZA United is excited to announce the newest addition to our Visual Supports Team - the professional-grade hot press laminator.  Coming in at an impressive 27-inch width, this piece of machinery works fast and furiously.  Velcro does stick, the pieces don't fall apart, our scissors are doing great, and believe it or not it's actually more cost effective.  So if you know of any visual supports that need some repair, we've got you covered.  And if you don't have any but wish you did, contact us to get your child's visual supports made today!
Thanks for all you do, and don't forget to tell us what else we can do...for you!
