Legendary toy maker Todd McFarlane met a local legend of our own last month. When most kids visit this celebrity they sit in awe of his work - but this time the roles were reversed!

Double Feature at the Movies!! For our February Family Event we reserved a movie theatre, adjusted the volume and lights, put on Veggie Tales and invited all our families to come for a night of free entertainment without the usual stresses of going out in public. Several of the kids were at the movies for the first time in their lives! So, we simply had to do it again - but make it even better. For our March Family Event, AZA United has reserved TWO movie theatres next to each other - one for a kids' movie, one for adults. That's right! This is not a typo. Now we have something for the little ones as well as for more mature audiences on Saturday afternoon, March 15th, at Chandler Cinemas. Parents, looking for that long-lost date opportunity? Bring your respite provider and take comfort in the fact that your child is right next door should you be needed. If you would like to join us, please contact us as soon as possible. Tickets are limited and will be distributed on a first-come first-served basis. All Member families of AZA United are eligible for up to 6 free tickets for the child, family members and a habilitation/respite provider. This month's family event is being sponsored by our good friends at Arizona Autism Support! |

No Waiting List for Hab M AZA United recently was approved by DDD to provide Behavioral Habilitation - Masters, more commonly known as "Hab M." This service, which is available for children under age 3 (and continues through age 5), involves a comprehensive skills and behavior assessment followed by the creation of an individually designed behavioral habilitation (ABA) program. It also includes demonstration and hands-on training of the program's activities and objectives, including data collection procedures. Any family whose child is eligible for this service may contact us to schedule an appointment! There is no waiting list to get started and we will serve families anywhere in the valley. |

Autism Insurance Bill Moving Forward So far so good for Arizona Senate bill #1263 ("Steven's Law"), which would increase health insurance coverage for individuals on the autism spectrum. The Senate Committee on Health heard the bill on February 14th and unanimously approved it. The next step is for the Senate Appropriations Committee to hear the bill on Tuesday, March 4th at 1:30 pm. This hearing is open to the public and supporters are encouraged to attend. If successful, the bill will then go through the House of Representatives for approval. Employee of the Month! This month we are proud to honor Leah R. as our Employee of the Month! One of her many families describes her work this way: "She is very professional, organized, timely, thoughtful of the family's needs and really talented. You can see she works in the field because she really wants to make a difference by teaching the child and to help them grow and learn. She is extremely patient with his behaviors, is gentle, caring, knows how to re-direct. Recently she came up with an idea to help our son learn the names of the children in his class - she created a puzzle of their pictures so that he can be engaged and learn to name them as they work on the puzzle. As a habilitator, she is in a class of her own!!" In Leah's own words, "I started doing habilitation as a summer job after working in a special needs classroom. I have stuck around because, as an educator, I love thinking outside the box! I also enjoy building relationships with my families and having fun with my students at the same time." Leah's future goals include pursuing a Master's in special education and becoming a certified teacher, as well as teaching yoga. Most importantly, her favorite toy is a little air pump that pumps hot dog shaped balloons. "I got it for $2.50 at Frys and all my kids love it." Well done Leah! You are clearly an educational as well as financial genius.
