| HUNTERS WOODS |
|
| Many great memories!
We have said goodbye to the Hunters Woods building. We got all the necessary furniture, books, teaching aides and equipment moved to the building on North Shore Dr. A moving sale allowed for many of the items we don't need to be used by others. At the Deconsecration Service held on June 6, I spoke to the group assembled about the many years of service to the community given by Preschool teachers in that space. Teachers were praised for being the loving face of God for so many children who have come through those doors.

| PRESCHOOL IS ACCREDITED BY NAEYC |
|
The following are excerpts of a letter received June 30, 2008.
Dear Ms. Plum; Congratulations! Your program has achieved accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The administration, teaching staff, and families of United Christian Parish Preschool are all to be congratulated for being one of the first programs in the country to earn the mark of quality represented by the reinvented NAEYC Accreditation system. On behalf of NAEYC, and specifically the NAEYC Academy for Early Childhood Program Accreditation, I commend your program's outstanding efforts in pursuing NAEYC Accreditation. Thank you for making the commitment to pursue NAEYC Accreditation. Working together, we can build public recognition and support for NAEYC Accreditation, the mark of quality in early childhood education and improve the lives of children and families across this nation. Now that you have achieved this mark of quality we look forward to continuing to work with you throughout your accreditation term in a process of continuous improvement, the hallmark of any accreditation system. Sincerely, Stephanie Olmore Director, Program Assessment & Compliance NAEYC Academy for Early Childhood Program Accreditation |

I'll have to admit I am a bit tired, but really excited. The work we did to get ready for the accreditation visit was tremendous; it paid off. We have that prestigious title to put with our name. It was well deserved, but you know as well as I how great the teachers at our preschool are. It is a wonderful affirmation for an objective review to say that we are doing an excellent job. When I return from vacation, however, I'll be talking to the staff about a journey continuing, not ending. We will continue to learn and grow, creating the very best learning environment for your children.
The move from Hunters Woods took many, many hours of coordination, planning and heavy lifting. I am taking a break for a few weeks and then back to planning for our use of facilities in some new and different ways. Being crowded for a few years will pay off in a beautiful new set of classrooms in the new building.

| SPECIAL TRIBUTE |
|
Mary Anna Ramirez, who was Assistant Teacher for the Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 3's class this past year retired after 31 years of working with Child Development Center and then United Christian Parish Preschool that CDC became. Mary Anna has shown her love of children to hundreds of families. She has been a wonderful support to many staff members through the years. We deeply value her service to children, families and the community. We value her friendship. Thankfully, we will get to see Mary Anna occasionally as she is willing to be a substitute teacher for us next year. It will be very tough to fill her shoes! |

| PRESCHOOL ADVISORY COMMITTEE |
|
Thanks!
We are deeply grateful to Marilyn Orr who has served on PAC for four years and as chair for the last year. She has worked tirelessly doing the routine tasks, but especially as an advocate for the preschool and the work we do. Marilyn is ending her service on PAC and beginning a three year term on the Parish Board, governing body of the church. (Note: I discovered that last spring we thanked Marilyn for her service because she was leaving PAC. Thankfully she was persuaded to stay one more year and took the job of chair. Joan Denchfield will be taking over as Chair for 0809. Susie Livingood, Amy Smith and Claire Evans continue their terms as parents PAC members. PAC is made up of 4 church members and 3 parents. They are appointed by the Parish Board for a 2-year term which can be followed by a second 2-year term. Church members and parent representatives on the committee offer their expertise in the fields of business (marketing, finance, etc.), human resources, development, education, law, health, management or communications. The current group has given very professional service this past year. |
| STREAM RESTORATION |
|
Big Trucks and Diggers
Hunters Woods children enjoyed watching all the big rucks and diggers in the parking lot and the stream land behind the building during the spring. Many people asked if it was the work of the devleoper who has purchased the property. It was not that, but a great stream restoration project. Living in Reston is like living in a park with forests, paths, wildlife and streams, but since Reston started developing, the tree roots have been unearthed and the streams have been getting deeper and the stream banks steeper. In order to help our streams, Reston Association is working with Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. who will be redesigning the shape of the streams to handle the water running off our streets, parking lots, and houses during a rain storm. Our restoration project focuses on Snakeden Branch stream that flows from Reston Parkway between South Lakes Drive and Glade Drive. Snakeden Branch feeds water into Lake Audubon, even in times of drought. Snakeden also delivers dirt from the stream banks, filling in the west cove of Lake Audubon with sediment. The restoration project will dramatically reduce erosion of Snakeden Branch and help us have beautiful streams again. For more information on the entire project see http://www.reston.org/Nature/n_natural_resources.html. If you saw the work in the spring, take a walk on the path now that grass and wildflowers have grown. |
| FAMILY SURVEY 0809 RESULTS |
|
| Thanks for your participation!
By Marilyn Orr, PAC Chair The annual parent survey was distributed to families in April of 2008 with a deadline of April 25th. The survey was basically unchanged from the previous year. The first two pages of the parent survey were the NAEYC required questions and a final page contained a few additional questions of interest to the Preschool and allowed parents space to write general comments. The survey questions are attached in Appendix A, with questions 1-26 being the NAEYC survey questions. For the short answer questions, the available responses were "Yes," "No," "Don't Know," and "N/A." By the end of the school year, 96 surveys had been completed and returned, the majority by the deadline. This represents approximately two-thirds of the families represented in the school. Overall, the results are very positive, with the overwhelming majority of the parents happy with the education and environment at UCP Preschool. In some cases, the NAEYC survey questions were more appropriate to a full day program, or a program caring for infants and younger toddlers than participate in UCP Preschool's program. The multiple choice questions received extremely positive responses. Of the questions applicable to the majority of students (i.e., excluding those questions targeting specific subgroups), all received better than 90 percent positive responses except for four questions. Two of those questions (with 89 and 70 percent positive responses) dealt with the frequency of communication between teacher and parents. The NAEYC survey is designed for a variety of programs, including those providing full day care or care for infants, where weekly or more frequent communication between parents and teachers is more likely. Only two of the surveys containing negative responses to these questions about communication contained any comments related to that issue. In fact, the vast majority of parents who gave a negative response to the one or both of the communication questions, gave very positive comments about the school. A third question, with 82% positive responses, also involved communication and the use of information by the teacher. The fourth question, with 88% positive responses, was poorly worded and should be changed. The remaining broadly applicable questions received better than 90 percent positive responses, including the questions about the quality of the teaching and administrative staff, the quality of the program, and communication. There were 70 written comments from 44 respondents, basically in the categories of Academics, Activities, Carline, Communication, Compliments, Facilities, Feedback, Parent Participation, Parenting Information, Personnel, Registration, and Schedule. The largest group of comments (40 percent) was compliments for the teaching staff, administrative staff, and programs. The categories representing more than 5 percent of comments were Academics (5.7 percent), Communication (8 percent), Facilities (11 percent), Feedback (7 percent) and Personnel (5.7 percent). The general gist was that several parents requested more formal academics, more frequent and timely communications (perhaps via email) regarding school and classroom events, playground and other facilities improvements, and more frequent and detailed feedback on individual student progress. PAC and the Director consider survey results very carefully and make every effort to address any issues that are raised in the surveys. Parents are encouraged to send any concerns to first, the Director and next to PAC as issues arise, not waiting until next April's survey. Parent suggestions and questions are always welcomed. If you would like more detailed information than this summary provides, a copy of the full survey results is available in the Preschool office.
