I ran my last marathon in 1973 because I couldn't continue denying that running was the major contributor to my low back pain.
I tried swimming laps for several months as an alternative aerobic activity, stroking back and forth in the pool for hours that seemed like days, coming home smelling like chlorine, my hair tinted green. Swimming wasn't my solution.
Next, I tried long distance cycling to replace my running addiction, averaging 3,000 miles a year for 4-5 years, riding several challenging week long rides through the Rocky Mountains and along the West coast, pedaling around Mt. Rainier in one day, and squeezing in as many century rides as I could.
By now, you should have the picture: Balance has been a challenge for me.
Today, I'm partially reformed, limiting my runs to 1/2 hr - 3/4 hr on grass, only 1-3 hours bike rides, practicing Pilates, and doing strength & conditioning workouts three times a week. It's a balanced program that's working well for me and I'm satisfied with progress, not perfection.
Finally, I'm learning the value of slowing down and quieting my mind for brief periods of time during the day, doing nothing, turning off my thinking, practicing an attitude of gratitude-- feeling thankful for my health, family, friends, and my work, finally realizing that I benefit from the quiet times--physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Frequently Asked Questions:
- How do you maintain your wellness? I definitely need to receive regular help from wellness professionals to maintain my strength and flexibility and overall health for performing my physically demanding work. Fortunately, I've been able to receive services from other practitioners, including massage and bodyworking therapists, a personal trainer, physical therapist, a Pilates professional, and a holistic chiropractor.
- Do you ever schedule 1/2 hour sessions? I will do 1/2 hour sessions if the client requests it, and in many cases it's enough time to achieve a good outcome. My goal is to get my clients symptom free as quickly as possible. Most of them present with problems that require at least an hour for a good result. Several of my clients prefer a more thorough 1 1/2 hour treatment.
- Is it possible to get more balance in life nowadays? Absolutely, according to Joel & Michelle Levey. In their book, Living In Balance, A Dynamic Approach For Creating Harmony & Wholeness in a Chaotic World, they say that even though we can't simplify our lifestyles, quit our jobs, or run away from home, there are strategies and perspectives that can help restore and maintain a sense of inner and outer balance, reassuring us that balance can be cultivated and enjoyed.

Take The Time
Practicing silence means making a commitment to take a certain amount of time to simply Be. It means periodically withdrawing from the activity of speech---from such activities as watching TV, listening to the radio, or reading a book. If you stay with the experience, the internal dialogue begins to quieten, and soon the silence becomes profound. If you never give yourself the opportunity to experience silence, this creates turbulence in your internal dialogue.
