BIG BOX STORE
DISCUSSION PANEL Oct. 6th Thursday
The Powhatan Office of Economic Department, in partnership with the Powhatan Chamber of Commerce and the Longwood Small Business Development Center, will host a panel discussion focusing on
"Big Box Competition" on Tuesday, October 6
from 8-10 a.m. at the County Seat Restaurant. The panel's keynote speaker will be Marc Willson, Retail Industry Consultant, Virginia Small Business Development Center Network, located at the Mason Enterprise Center - School of Public Policy, George Mason University. Willson, with 35 years of experience, helps retail, restaurant and tourism-related small businesses refine and promote their concepts to the public. In 1975, Willson started his retail career as co-owner of the largest distributor of Earth Shoes in the U.S. Since then, he has held executive positions with such retailers as Britches of Georgetowne, Crown Books, Circuit City, The Bicycle Exchange, Ecampus.com and Storetrax, Inc. Willson joined the SBDC in 2009 as a retail industry consultant and will develop the "Small Town & Retail Merchant" program throughout the State of Virginia. The key strategies he will discuss during
the Powhatan seminar will include: *Building sales through differentiation,
not direct competition
*Generating repeat traffic by making the
shopping experience memorable
*Creating local awareness and loyalty
through effective communications
*Growing sales and profits by implementing
customer loyalty programs
Also appearing on the panel will be:
John Gaskins, associate professor of marketing and retailing, College of Business and Economics, Longwood University; Faye O. Prichard, Mayor, Town of Ashland; and Sheri McGuire, executive director, Longwood Small Business Development Center. The discussion will focus on the changing retail environment, including the effect of retail "big box" strategies. The panelists will examine the effects of "big box competition" on small business, including who survives, how they survive, and the overall economic impact on the entire community. The discussion will close with questions from the audience. To register for this free seminar, call the Powhatan Office of Economic Development
