No Excuses - Go to School Attendance Campaign returns for seventh year
The No Excuses - Go to School Attendance Campaign will kick off its seventh year with its official launch today, September 4, 2012. The campaign is designed to encourage students to attend school consistently in all grades. The 2011/2012 No Excuses - Go to School Attendance Campaign proved to be very successful, increasing average daily attendance (ADA) by .31 percent and netting an additional $950,000 in funding for the district.
The No Excuses - Go to School Attendance Campaign was also highlighted in an AP news story focusing on successful attendance campaigns throughout California. Click here to read the story in USA Today.
One of the highlights of the Attendance Campaign are the monthly incentive prizes. The campaign raises awareness of the importance of strong attendance habits through monthly incentives donated by local businesses and community members. Every month, one student with perfect attendance at 63 Elk Grove Unified schools is selected to receive an incentive prize.
The Elk Grove Auto Mall (EGAM) Graduating Seniors Attendance Drive will also return for its seventh year in 2012/2013, giving students in the Class of 2013 the chance to win $20,000 to purchase a vehicle from any dealership at the Elk Grove Auto Mall. To be eligible, students need to have at least five months of perfect attendance - which do not need to be consecutive - and a 2.0 GPA.
Last year, Krystal Prasad from Pleasant Grove High School took home the $20,000 grand prize and purchased a silver Toyota Corolla with her winnings. Nine runners-up each received a $100 VISA gift card. The runners-up were: Kelsey Orr (Cosumnes Oaks High School), Joshua Pearson (Elk Grove High School), Timothy Sou (Florin High School), Sophia Yan (Franklin High School), Jacob Seatris (Laguna Creek High School), Karen Tran (Monterey Trail High School), Michaela Zuber (Sheldon High School), Maichoua Thao (Valley High School) and Theodore Gali (Calvine High School).
Elementary school students have a shot at earning an end-of-the-year grand prize for having perfect attendance. The Perfect Attendance Bike Giveaway allows each of Elk Grove Unified's 39 elementary schools to award one new bicycle and helmet to one student who obtained perfect attendance for at least one calendar month throughout the school year through the Perfect Attendance Bike Giveaway.
One student at each of Elk Grove Unified's middle and high schools will have the chance to win a new iPod Shuffle at the end of the school year for having perfect attendance - for the entire year - from August 16, 2012 to May 10, 2013.
Also returning this year, middle school and high school students in grades 9-11 will have a chance to win an end-of-the-year grand prize through the Perfect Attendance Laptop Giveaway. One middle school and one high school student in grades 9-11 will walk away with a new laptop computer and printer at the end of the year - just for having at least four months of perfect attendance. Similar to the Bike Giveaway, students will earn entries for each month they have perfect attendance. At the end of the school year, one middle school and one high school student will each be selected to receive a new laptop and printer.

EGUSD teachers SHAPE up through nutritional awareness program
Hundreds of elementary school teachers at Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) are learning how to better educate their students about the importance of nutrition - all through the Shaping Health As Partners in Education (SHAPE) program.
The SHAPE program, sponsored by the EGUSD Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Department, is available for K-6 teachers in the district. Each EGUSD elementary school has at least one teacher participating in the program, with some schools boasting as many as 30 teachers participating in the program.
"Healthy, well-nourished students are better prepared to learn," said Anne Gaffney, nutrition specialist for the district. "The program was created to help teachers provide nutrition education to students and to help connect the classroom with the cafeteria."
A part of EGUSD since 1993, the SHAPE program covers four main areas: offering healthy meals, promoting student nutrition education; building and maintaining partnerships and implementing nutrition policies. Through the SHAPE program, teachers learn how to improve the health and academic success of students through the classroom, cafeteria and school-wide events.
The EGUSD FNS Department will wrap up their most recent round of SHAPE workshops in September. Last year, a total of 475 teachers attended SHAPE workshops and a similar number of teachers are expected to attend the workshops this year. Click here for more information about the SHAPE program.

Florin High School student wins statewide trigonometry competition
Kim Chung, a senior from Florin High School, was recently named the 2012 California State Trig*Star Champion. Chung competed against more than 800 students representing 43 high schools from throughout California.
Trig*Star is an annual high school mathematics competition based on the practical application of trigonometry. The competition helps bridge the gap between the usage of trigonometry in "the real world" and theoretical concepts that students learn in the classroom. Students that participate are not only provided with an opportunity to earn awards, but also leave with a better understanding of the technical profession of Land Surveying and Mapping.
The competition consists of a timed exercise that involves solving trigonometry problems using triangle formulas, circle formulas, the law of sines and the law of cosines. Chung successfully completed his test - and received a perfect score - in less than 22 minutes, 12 minutes faster than the runner-up. He also participated in the National Trig*Star test as the representative from California. He placed 21st among other state winners.
The Trig*Star competition was sponsored locally by the California Department of Transportation, California Transportation Foundation and California Land Surveyors Association Sacramento Chapter. Click here for more information about the Trig*Star competition.
