Laguna Creek High School recognized as a model SPARC recipient
Laguna Creek High School's counseling department has once again been recognized as a model Support Personnel Accountability Report Card (SPARC) recipient. This year marks the 11th year Laguna Creek has received this award.
The SPARC is a continuous improvement tool that gives a school site an opportunity to demonstrate effective communication and a commitment to getting results. Modeled after the School Accountability Report Card (SARC), the SPARC has been developed by an advisory group of Los Angeles County counselors, counselor supervisors, counselor educators, and California Department of Education (CDE) consultants.
To receive a recognition award, counseling teams must align their curriculum and services to the National Standards for School Counseling, practice data collection and evaluation, complete a Support Personnel Accountability Report Card (SPARC), submit it for review, and send a completed application packet to the LACOE.
Laguna Creek was formally recognized for the achievement at the 3rd Annual Safe Schools Conference on August 2 in Long Beach, CA.

EGUSD receives $6.7 million after-school programs grant
The Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) has been awarded a $6.7 million, five-year 21st Century Community Learning Center grant to support after school programs at twelve elementary schools.
EGUSD will receive over $1.3 million annually, for five years, to deliver academic support, enrichment programs and family literacy services for children and families who are currently on after school program waiting lists. The federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers are awarded by the California Department of Education (CDE) through a highly-competitive grant process. With only $15 million in available funding, the CDE received $460 million in applications, making EGUSD one of only 18 districts statewide to receive this grant.
The 21st Century Learning Center grant will expand EGUSD's highly successful after school program model that brings together rigorous academic support, engaging and enriching activities, and parent and family outreach and education services. Programs are offered through strong support from school sites and partnerships with community organizations.
The 21st Century Community Learning Center grant will serve over 900 children and their families at the following twelve elementary schools: Florin, Isabelle Jackson, Samuel Kennedy, Anna Kirchgater, Herman Leimbach, Charles Mack, Barbara Comstock Morse, Prairie, David Reese, John Reith, Sierra Enterprise and Union House.
"The 21st Century grant will allow us to expand after school programs at these schools to serve more students that are on the waiting list," says Mark Vigario, director of Learning Support Services for the district. "The grant will allow us to reach more students to provide them with one-to-one help with homework, focused instruction in areas of need and enrichment activities they would not normally be exposed to."

Voluntary Athletic Contribution program sees greater success after second year
The second year of Elk Grove Unified's Voluntary Athletic Contribution program has proven to be successful, generating more revenue and higher levels of participation than during the inaugural 2010-2011 school year.
During the 2011-2012 school year, 28 percent - a total of 1,563 athletic program participants of an overall total of 5,692 - contributed to the VAC program. The number of participants was nearly double the number from last year. The increase in VAC participants netted an additional $28,178, bringing the grand total for the year to $103,125.
The total revenue generated by the VAC this year - in conjunction with this year's budget and the carryover from last year's VAC earnings - has resulted in favorable outcomes for the district's athletic program. The district was able to return 50 percent of the contributions generated by each school site to their respective athletic departments, totaling nearly $51,000. The district was also able to reimburse sites for the total cost of all league game officials - a total of $206,744 - and provide a subsidy to school sites for transportation cost overruns.
"The 2012-2013 school year will present yet another fiscal challenge for EGUSD athletic programs," said Jim Smrekar, district athletic director. "But we are confident that as we continue to work with all of our valued stakeholders to promote the value of athletics in the high school setting, the success of our VAC program will continue to grow and support our endeavors."

EGUSD implements $75,000 adult education grant from California Department of Education
The Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) was one of 10 school districts from throughout California selected to receive a $75,000 Policy to Performance (P2P) Pilot Project grant to help adult education students transition to higher education from the California Department of Education. Elk Grove Unified was the only school district in Sacramento County selected to receive this grant. The P2P project ran from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012.
"Elk Grove Adult and Community Education's (EGACE) program goals for the P2P project were to increase the transfer rates of eligible students from adult education to post-secondary programs by providing tools, classes and workshops that will help them improve their reading, math, basic computer skills and study skills to enter and be successful in college," said Karen Malkiewicz, program administrator for EGACE.
School districts who have been awarded the P2P grant must use the funds to strengthen an existing program or build a new comprehensive student support services component within their current postsecondary transition program. Grantees had to have qualified for federal adult education and literacy grants called Workforce Investment Act, Title II and had to demonstrate a clear and substantial plan for a comprehensive student support services component.
The P2P program at EGACE achieved many successes. A total of 48 students enrolled in the program. Thirty-eight students obtained their high school diploma or GED certificate while enrolled in the P2P program, 28 students transitioned into post-secondary education, 21 students were placed into college-level courses and 25 students gained employment as a result of being enrolled in the program.
California was one of eight states to participate in P2P, which was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Vocational and Adult Education. California's goal is to help support adult education students to increase their transfer rates to post secondary education programs.

Transitional Kindergarten comes to EGUSD for 2012-2013 school year
Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, the Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) will begin offering transitional kindergarten (TK) - a bridge program between early learning and kindergarten using a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate - at six elementary school sites throughout the district. Elementary schools with TK programs for the upcoming school year are Helen Carr Castello, John Ehrhardt, Ellen Feickert, Robert J. Fite, Florin and Union House. The TK program in California was created in an effort to better prepare students to perform their best when they begin school under the Kindergarten Readiness Act. This new law was signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on September 10, 2010. The law will change the birth date for kindergarten eligibility from December 2 to September 1 over the next three years. The new age eligibility requirement will be phased in over three years: - 2012-2013 - Child must turn 5 by November 1 to enter kindergarten
- 2013-2014 - Child must turn 5 by October 1 to enter kindergarten
- 2014-2015 - Child must turn 5 by September 1 to enter kindergarten
TK will follow the same school year calendar as a kindergarten class and will contain the same number of instructional minutes per day. New eligibility requirements for TK will be phased in over three years: - 2012-2013 - Child must turn 5 between November 2-December 2
- 2013-2014 - Child must turn 5 between October 2-December 2
- 2014-2015 - Child must turn 5 between September 2-December 2
Parents of students who are too young to begin kindergarten may choose to enroll in TK. Enrollment in TK is entirely optional but all school districts are required to offer the program. EGUSD will not provide transportation for TK. For more information about TK, contact the PreK-6 Education Department at (916) 686-7704. |
