Honoring Our Volunteers
Shavonne Powell of Charles Mack Elementary School
Shavonne Powell was recognized as an Education Partner at the June 5, 2012, meeting of the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education. Powell is an active, influential participant on several school committees. As the vice-president of Charles Mack Elementary School's PTO, she has worked to raise funds and establish healthy, fun activities for students and families. As a School Site Council member, she became more informed and provided thoughtful input about school programs and budgets. Powell's ideas about closing the achievement gap have been put into practice, especially with respect to the direction of the African-American Advisory Committee. This group of family members and school staff has taken practical steps to improve academic achievement, reduce disciplinary referrals and promote parental involvement among African-American students. She has worked hard to raise awareness and support by speaking to parents, guardians and relatives of students and offering her home as a comfortable meeting place so the effort can become community-based. She strongly advocates mentoring of at-risk youth, which has prompted the school to implement extended day girls and boys clubs. Powell has also been instrumental in bringing the Big Brothers Big Sisters program to the school. Powell is married to Joel Powell II. They have two children who attend school at Mack: Joel Powell III - a second grade student and Jordan Reed - a sixth grade student. Shavonne is also stepmother to two stepdaughters: Brianna and Brittani. |

No Excuses - Go to School Attendance Campaign draws to a close with amazing grand prizes for lucky students
The 2011/2012 No Excuses - Go to School Attendance Campaign ended the school year on a high note with average daily attendance increasing throughout the district by .31 percent - which equates to approximately $950,000 in funding for the district - and the selection of grand prize winners from among the hundreds of student participants from schools across the district.
The Elk Grove Auto Mall Graduating Seniors Attendance Drive came to dramatic conclusion when Pleasant Grove High School senior Krystal Prasad started a Scion xB to win the $20,000 grand prize. Seniors in the Class of 2012 had the opportunity to win $20,000 to be used to purchase a vehicle from any dealer at the Elk Grove Auto Mall. To be eligible, seniors had to have a minimum of five months of perfect attendance in 2011-2012 and at least a 2.0 GPA. The following nine runners-up each received a $100 VISA gift card: Kelsey Orr (Cosumnes Oaks High School), Joshua Pearson (Elk Grove High School), Timothy Sou (Florin High School), Sophia Yan (Franklin High School), Jacob Seatris (Laguna Creek High School), Karen Tran (Monterey Trail High School), Michaela Zuber (Sheldon High School), Maichoua Thao (Valley High School) and Theodore Gali (Calvine High School).
Meamoona Uzman of Samuel Jackman Middle School and Camri Williams of Laguna Creek High School received a new laptop computer and printer through the Perfect Attendance Laptop Giveaway, the newest "grand prize" contest in the campaign. To be eligible for the laptops, students had to have at least one month of perfect attendance this past school year. Runners-up from middle, high and alternative schools each received a $15 iTunes gift card.
Students at the middle and high school levels who obtained perfect attendance - for the entire school year from August 15, 2011 to April 30, 2012 - also had the chance to win a grand prize at the end of the school year. One winner from each middle, high and alternative school were selected to receive a new iPod Shuffle.
Elementary school students also had the opportunity to win a new bicycle and helmet for having at least one month of perfect attendance. Each month a student had perfect attendance, they earned an entry in the end-of-the-year drawing for the bicycle and helmet. In April 2012, one winner at each of the district's 39 elementary schools was selected to receive a brand new bicycle and helmet.

EGUSD elementary school students "Hoop-It-Up" with KidTribe
Students at five elementary schools throughout the Elk Grove Unified School District eagerly "Hooped It Up" with the members of KidTribe at assemblies during the week of June 4.
The assemblies, sponsored by the Elk Grove Unified School District's Food and Nutrition Services Department, are energetic "community-fitness concerts" that activate heart rates and inspire children to exercise.
"Hoop-A-Pa-Loo-Za is a great activity for the students and coincides well with our district wellness policy," said Anne Gaffney, nutrition specialist for the district. "This event is the perfect opportunity to reinforce healthy eating and exercise habits."
During the assemblies, KidTribe engaged students in Taste Bud's nutrition reinforcement raps and Stretch-A-Rama's tools for a flexible body to encourage students in making healthy food and physical activity choices.
Founded in 2002, KidTribe was a pioneer in obesity prevention and health promotion. The company began as a grass roots organization to create a happier, healthier world for today's children through music and movement. Since then, it has engaged over 2.5 million kids and teachers in thousands of schools and homes across the United States and the United Kingdom. Click here for more information about KidTribe. |

EGUSD students find their inner "healthy" Olympian at the Nutrition Olympics
The Yoga Stretch. The Strawberry Relay. The Carrot Hop.The Splash Relay. It might not be the 100 meter dash but these events are just a few of the fun and educational activities fourth and fifth grade students at three Elk Grove Unified School District elementary schools participated in through the Nutrition Olympics events at their schools this month.
This exciting educational event combines physical activity and nutrition together to encourage students to eat more fruits and vegetables and to exercise 60 minutes a day for better health.
"The Nutrition Olympics are a fun way for students to be physically active while learning about making healthy food choices," said Anne Gaffney, R.D., nutrition specialist in Elk Grove Unified School District's Food and Nutrition Services Department. "All of the games are tied to a fruit or vegetable and nutrition information is provided."
The event highlights the serious health consequences of a poor diet and sedentary lifestyle, and encourages children to make healthy food choices and to be physically active. The Nutrition Olympics is sponsored by EGUSD Food and Nutrition Services, in collaboration with the Network for a Healthy California.
The Network for a Healthy California is a public health effort working with hundreds of partners and organizations to empower low-income Californians to live healthier lives through good nutrition and physical activity. Funding is from the USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly the Food Stamp Program). For food stamp information, call 877-847-3663. EGUSD students contribute artistically to new eco-friendly garden with City of Elk Grove
Thanks to the artistic efforts of nearly 1,100 Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) students, the City of Elk Grove just got a little more beautiful - and a little more educational. A total of 13 EGUSD schools - Edna Batey, Raymond Case, Elliott Ranch, Ellen Feickert, Foulks Ranch, Roy Herburger and Stone Lake elementary schools; Katherine L. Albiani Middle School; and Cosumnes Oaks, Elk Grove, Franklin, Pleasant Grove and Sheldon high schools - participated in the beautification of the City of Elk Grove's first rain garden plaza. These students created decorative tiles with the theme of preventing storm water pollution and water-wise gardening that were installed throughout the garden. Students from Franklin, Pleasant Grove and Sheldon high schools also assisted with planting native plants and the installations of the tiles in the garden. Students also received a visit from engineers from the City of Elk Grove who spoke on the importance of water-wise practices. The Elk Grove Rain Garden Plaza was designed with best practices for water efficiency in mind. Rain gardens are designed to catch and filter rainwater from roofs and pavements, which in turn uses storm water runoff for plant growth and soil enrichment instead of running directly into the storm drainage system. "Rain gardens are an incredibly effective and inexpensive way of maintaining a garden within an urban area," said Ray Pietersen, curriculum specialist for Elk Grove Unified. "They require little to no maintenance, fertilizer or pesticides. They can also not only make an area beautiful, they can also absorb noise, provide beneficial wildlife habitats and reduce heat." Click here for more information about the Rain Garden Plaza. |
