Laguna Creek High School takes home top awards at 2012 SMUD Northern California Solar Regatta

GETAWinners

Students in Laguna Creek High School's Green Energy Technology Academy (GETA) took home three of the top awards at the 2012 SMUD (Sacramento Municipal Utilities Agency) Northern California Solar Regatta on Friday, May 18 at Rancho Seco Lake.

Laguna Creek entered two teams in the competition, the "junior" team and the "senior" team.  The "junior" team won the slalom and speed races.  By finishing first in these races, the "junior" team amassed the highest point total for the day and took home the Regatta Cup.  The award-winning "junior" team consisted of the following students: Molly Kelly, Santana Marin, Andy Panuschka and Kerstin Wallinger.

The SMUD Northern California Solar Regatta is a water race that invites teams of students in grades 7-12 to design, build and compete with solar-powered boats.  Each student team is mentored by an educator or other school administrator.  During the school year, students were loaned solar modules to design and build the boats.  On race day, students competed in sprint, distance and slalom races.  Students also received awards for creativity, design and efficiency of their boats.

"I am extremely proud of our students' accomplishments at this event," said Eric Johnson, a science teacher at Laguna Creek and co-coordinator for GETA.  "With the help of Gerhard Panuschka, a parent of one of our students, both teams spent countless hours constructing, sanding, finishing and testing the boats.  They also learned a great deal in regards to the design and integration of the boat's power management system.  The students are already planning for next year's event and we hope that more teams step up to the challenge next year."

The GETA Academy is designed for students interested in green energy. GETA students explore the concepts of energy extraction, conversion and transmission processes through complex, hands-on, project-based work. Depending on their post secondary plans, students who graduate from the Green Energy Technology Academy will be prepared to enter two or four institutions of study, a technical training program or go directly to work in the Energy Sector.

The 2012 Northern California Solar Regatta was sponsored by SMUD and the San Joaquin Office of Education.  Click here for more information about the SMUD Solar Regatta.

Local artist teaches students to see the world through watercolors

    WatercolorArtist

With the expert assistance of local artist Jan Rau, students in Melody Bruch's sixth grade class at Edna Batey Elementary School were able to transform plain sheets of white paper into colorful watercolor-enhanced landscapes.

Although Batey students have been exposed to art history and different artists through the years due to the Art Docent program, most students had very little experience with using watercolors correctly.  During Rau's first visit, students learned how to watercolor properly, by using strokes, water and paint percentage.  Students then created their own landscape picture during Rau's second visit.

"Because Jan used to be a teacher, her interactions with the students were much like mine - instructive, encouraging, yet demanding," said Melody Bruch, a sixth grade teacher at Edna Batey.

"It was amazing to see all of the students take what they learned to heart in creating their landscapes with Jan.  The landscapes they created were beautiful, especially when taking into account the fact that they only participated in two one-and-a-half hour 'how to watercolor' workshops with Jan."

Rau is a former physical education teacher at Elk Grove High School, where she spent 24 years assisting the gymnastics team, advising the drill and bowling teams and coaching the track team. Rau also has a community park named in her honor through the Cosumnes Community Services District located on the corner of Sheldon Road and Elk Grove-Florin Road.  Click here for more information about Jan Rau and the park named in her honor.

Valley High School career academy selected for $12,000 grant from statewide agency

    VHSHealthTECH

Valley High School's Health TECH Academy has been selected to receive one of eight $12,000 Health Careers Training Program (HCTP) mini-grants from the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, putting the academy alongside other recipients, such as the University of California Regents and Stanford University.

Valley High School's Health TECH Academy will use the mini-grant on their "Your Choice, Your Career" program.  This program will allow Health TECH students to interact with health professionals from a broad array of careers through two career fairs.

"What makes the program unique is what happens after the career fairs," said John Buckmaster, Health TECH Academy coordinator at Valley.  "Health TECH students will take what they've learned to five Elk Grove Unified School District middle and high schools through traveling health and career fairs.

Students will also share their knowledge with the community at cultural awareness and community health education project presentations.  With the increasing demand for health care workers in all fields, 'Your Choice, Your Career' can help students and community alike see available options.

The academy focuses on helping underserved and underrepresented populations, which will help us achieve the overarching goal of 'Your Choice, Your Career,' which is to help increase diversity in healthcare."

Valley has partnered with Kaiser Permanente; Samuel Jackman Middle School; Blood Source; University of California, Davis' School of Medicine; and Stars Sports and Educational Services among others to administer the grant.

TDAP immunization required

for incoming seventh grade students

Pertussis

All incoming 7th grade students are required to show proof of receiving a Tdap booster shot prior to the start of the 2012-2013 school year.  The first day of school is Thursday, August 16.   Students will not be able to attend school until they have turned in proof of a Tdap booster shot to the school office.  Currently enrolled Elk Grove Unified School District students submit proof of this immunization over the summer at their EGUSD middle school.

A California law was passed prior to the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year which required all students entering 7th through 12th grade in the 2011-2012 school year provide schools proof that they had received an adolescent pertussis (whooping cough) booster shot (Tdap) prior to starting school. The new law was enacted following a widespread pertussis epidemic in 2010. Pertussis is a serious disease that causes coughing fits that can last for months.  It can also be deadly for infants.

Please note that the tetanus-diphtheria booster shot (Td) does not meet the requirement of the law.  Students must have the Tdap booster to meet the requirements of the new law.

California law allows parents/guardians to exempt their child from the pertussis booster (Tdap) immunization for two reasons:  (1) medical (by way of letter from physician) or (2) personal beliefs.  The law does not allow parents/guardians to elect an exemption out of convenience. The exemption form is available at the school and must be completed at the school of attendance). If you have questions, contact the nurse or Health Records Assistant at the school.
