Honoring Our Volunteers
Traci Darrington of Toby Johnson Middle School

EGUSD schools win $32,000 in grants
through Kaiser Permanente's
GET MOVING EGUSD! Program

Thanks to a generous donation from Kaiser Permanente, 32 Elk Grove Unified School District schools each received $1,000 grants through Kaiser Permanente's GET MOVING EGUSD! Program.
EGUSD Superintendent Steven M. Ladd, Ed.D. accepted the grants during the grand opening celebration of Kaiser Permanente's new Promenade Medical Offices on November 11. The 32 recipients of the Kaiser GET MOVING EGUSD! grant were formally recognized at the January 17, 2012 EGUSD Board of Education meeting by Dr. Richard Issacs, Physician-In-Chief and Dr. Lisa Liu from Kaiser Permanente, South Sacramento.
Originally, Kaiser Permanente planned to award 25 $1,000 grants to schools selected through an application process. However, after reviewing the applications from the 32 schools that applied for funding, Kaiser Permanente generously decided to fund all 32 projects.
"Physical activity is essential in keeping our students healthy and better prepared to perform their best while in school," Ladd said. "Kaiser Permanente's grants will give our schools valuable resources to facilitate innovative programs that promote the importance of physical fitness to our students in a fun and enjoyable environment."
Schools were asked to complete a short application, describing their school's proposed project to increase physical activity on their campus and how the grant funds would be used help their students "GET MOVING!" School sites also provided a brief summary and photos demonstrating how grant funds were spent at the end of the school year.
Elk Grove Unified schools came up with a variety of ideas geared towards getting their students physically fit. Much of the funds will be used to purchase physical education equipment such as pull-up bars, jump ropes, hula hoops, running journals, medicine balls, various other sporting equipment and added support for walking/running programs. In some cases, schools are using the funds to bring exercise programs such as Hoopalooza and Zumba to their students.
The following schools received $1,000 GET MOVING EGUSD! grants:
Elementary Schools: Maeola Beitzel, Arthur C. Butler, Raymond Case, Cosumnes River, Elitha Donner, John Ehrhardt, Elliott Ranch, Ellen Feickert, Foulks Ranch, Franklin, Roy Herburger, Isabelle Jackson, Herman Leimbach, Florence Markofer, James McKee, Barbara Comstock Morse, Pleasant Grove, Sierra Enterprise, Stone Lake, Sunrise, Mary Tsukamoto, Irene B. West
Middle Schools: Katherine L. Albiani, Edward Harris, Jr., Samuel Jackman, Toby Johnson, Elizabeth Pinkerton
High Schools: Florin, Monterey Trail, Pleasant Grove

EGUSD Internet Safety Challenge winners announced
Students in grades 3-6 at elementary schools throughout the Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) were invited to step up to the plate and take the EGUSD Internet Safety Challenge by taking a quick online quiz on Internet Safety. The quiz served to assess students' memory of last year's i-SAFE curriculum. The online quiz also allowed computer teachers to track their students' knowledge of basic Internet Safety.
Schools needed to reach 100 percent participation to be successful in the Challenge. In the end, 14 elementary schools reached this lofty goal: C.W. Dillard, Elitha Donner, John Ehrhardt, Elk Grove, Franklin, Arlene Hein, Florence Markofer, James McKee, Pleasant Grove, David Reese, Stone Lake, Mary Tsukamoto and Union House. Each school with 100 percent participation received an "Internet Safety Challenge - 100 percent participation" logo to add to their school websites.
From the 14 schools, four schools were randomly selected to receive a handheld video camera to support the promotion of Internet Safety at their school site. The following elementary schools were recognized at the January 17, 2012 EGUSD Board of Education meeting: C.W. Dillard, Elk Grove, Arlene Hein and Stone Lake.
The EGUSD Internet Safety Challenge was the most recent innovation in EGUSD's Internet Safety Program. Created in 2008, the EGUSD Internet Safety Program is an on-going project and commitment. As new tools emerge, the district expands the curriculum and trainings accordingly. Previously, the district has provided Internet Safety workshops for teachers, administrators and parents, as well as 2WebWatchers - a blog that invites the EGUSD community at large into an on-going, online discussion on pertinent topics and two Internet Safety Video contests.

EGUSD seeks public input on technology plan
The Elk Grove Unified School District is seeking input from the public on its revised Technology Plan for 2012-2015.
Over the past several months, district staff have been working to create a Draft Technology Plan for 2012-2015 for review by stakeholders and members of the community. California Education Code requires school districts to have a three to five year technology plan as a condition of receiving any technology grant administered by the California Department of Education after January 1, 2002.
At Elk Grove Unified, subsequent grants and the Erate program have required the district to modify our technology plan every three years. The district's current plan expires on June 30, 2012. Click here for more information about the Erate program.
Elk Grove Unified welcomes comments and suggestions about the draft technology plan. District staff will revise the draft technology plan appropriately and present the plan to the EGUSD Board of Education for public discussion, comment and approval prior to June 30, 2012. Click here to view a draft of the EGUSD Technology Plan for 2012-2015.
Please contact Greg Lindner at glindner@egusd.net or Steve Mate at smate@egusd.net with comments and/or suggestions.
