Kindergarten

Registration

Kindergarten registration for the 2012-2013 school year at Elk Grove Unified School District's year-round schools is now open.  For schools on a modified traditional or traditional calendar registration will begin on January 3, 2012.

In an effort to better prepare students to perform their best when they begin school, California schools are in the process of enacting the 2010 Kindergarten Readiness Act (Senate Bill 1381).  This new law will change the birth date for kindergarten eligibility from December 2 to September 1 over the next three years.  The new age eligibility requirement will be phased in over three years:

  • 2012-2013 - Child must turn 5 by November 1 to enter kindergarten
  • 2013-2014 - Child must turn 5 by October 1 to enter kindergarten
  • 2014-2015 - Child must turn 5 by September 1 to enter kindergarten

For the first time this year, families will also register for Transitional Kindergarten (TK), a new grade level created through the passage of the 2010 Kindergarten Readiness Act.  This two-year program was created to build a bridge between early learning and kindergarten by using a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate.  TK will follow the same school year calendar as a kindergarten class and will contain the same number of instructional minutes per day.

Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, Elk Grove Unified will begin offering TK at select elementary school sites in the district.  New eligibility requirements for TK will be phased in over three years:

  • 2012-2013 - Child must turn 5 between November 2-December 2
  • 2013-2014 - Child must turn 5 between October 2-December 2
  • 2014-2015 - Child must turn 5 between September 2-December 2

EGUSD's PreK-6 Education Department is working with other departments to develop curriculum and select locations for TK classes for the 2012-2013 school year.  Schools will contact parents with students who are eligible for TK after April 1, 2012 with the locations of the TK classes so parents can decide on enrolling their child.  EGUSD does not provide transportation for TK.

For more information about kindergarten/TK registration, contact the PreK-6 Education Department at (916) 686-7702.

EGUSD, Stone Lake Elementary School recognized for partnership at Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge

  SLWR

The Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge (SLNWR) recently recognized the Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) and Stone Lake Elementary School for their partnership through the district's service learning initiative.  Awards were presented on November 4 at the grand opening of the Blue Heron Trails Visitor Contact Station at the refuge.

Through the Cal Serve grant, EGUSD students have participated in habitat restoration and water quality monitoring.  The district has also partnered with SLNWR and other government agencies to conduct environmental education mentoring programs between EGUSD high schools and elementary schools.

"Currently, the district provides transportation to SLNWR for any EGUSD teacher to take their class to the refuge to conduct a service learning project through a small grant," said Ray Pietersen, program specialist for science, physical education, health and family life for the district.  "We invite any EGUSD teacher to take advantage of this opportunity to allow their class to participate in a service learning project that will not only broaden their educational horizons, but is also beneficial to the community."

Stone Lake Elementary School was recognized for their long-time service learning partnership with SLNWR.  Through the partnership, hundreds of students over the past several years have participated in science/environmental education opportunities at SLNWR.  Stone Lake students and staff have also performed invasive species removal and have replanted native plants to help restore SLNWR to its natural state.

SLNWR, which is operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is a part of the National Wildlife Refuge System.  The 94 million acre National Wildlife Refuge System encompasses more than 542 refuges, thousands of small wetlands and other special management areas.  A National Wildlife Refuge since 1994, SLNWR contains 18,000 acres of land and is home to a variety of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects.  The refuge offers docent guided hikes, guided paddle trips, birdwatching, special events such as the annual Walk on the Wildside festival and education tours for school and civic groups.

Walking Wednesdays at Beitzel

  WalkingWednesdays

Every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., the running track at Maeola Beitzel Elementary School is filled with students - all excitedly participating in Beitzel's weekly Walking Wednesdays activity.

Created by Beitzel vice-principal Jason Campbell, Walking Wednesdays aims to increase the movement, physical activity and awareness of being physically active in Beitzel's over 1,000 students.

"It's encouraging to see how our students have eagerly participated in Walking Wednesdays," Campbell said.  "They really enjoy running to music and finding out the distance they have traveled by running or walking around the track."

Walking Wednesdays not only touches on physical education academic standards, but it also contains a social science element as well.  As the students walk to certain distances, they are exposed to different areas in the United States through the morning announcements.  A total of six laps on Beitzel's track is equal to one mile.

"We started our journey from Beitzel Elementary and so far we have walked a distance of 388 miles from our school," Campbell said.  "This distance has placed us at Disneyland.  On our way to Disneyland, we have notified the students of different locations in California.  Our goal is to walk across America and make it to Florida.  We have a United States map posted in our multipurpose room to track the different locations that we as a school have walked/ran to."

Campbell has big plans for expanding the program in the future.

"We're hoping to add in the participation of our Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students)," Campbell said.  "We're planning on holding special events during recess where the students will "travel" to destinations when they reach a certain mileage.  Two example activities would include 'Relay Races in Reno' or 'Hula Hoops in Houston.'  We're also planning on training our student council members to help organize the Walking Wednesday events, organize playlists and assist our parent volunteers."

Food & Nutrition Services Department now offering catering services for local businesses

FNSCollage

The Elk Grove Unified School District's Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Department has provided catering services for the district since the late 1990's.  But now the department is expanding their reach by offering their catering services to the surrounding community.

"The main purpose of the catering program is to provide a service for district schools and departments," said Michelle Shaw, Operations Manager for FNS.  "We can serve all types of events, from small meetings of eight all the way up to several hundred as we have for the annual Spotlight Elk Grove event.  Now we've decided to start offering our catering services to local businesses in Elk Grove as well."

The catering program, which is self-funded, offers a wide variety of choices to please even the pickiest food connoisseur.  Breakfast options include continental breakfast choices, fresh baked muffins and pastries and breakfast burritos, as well as fresh fruit trays. The FNS catering program also offers Starbucks coffee service.  For your lunch and dinner catering needs, FNS catering can also provide a variety of options - such as salad and sandwich platters, boxed lunches, specialty trays, meeting munchies and "hot" options - including pizza, rice bowls and fajita, taco or potato bars.  If none of those choices fit your needs, don't worry, Food & Nutrition can assist you in planning the perfect menu.

If you'd like to have FNS cater your next event or to find out more information, contact Michelle Shaw at (916) 686-7735, x 7877 or mshaw@egusd.net.
