Back to School = Update Your Information
With the beginning of a new school year, the time has come to update your child's information at their school site. It is important that this information is up-to-date at the school site so you can be contacted in case of an emergency. Please update general information (address, phone numbers, emergency contacts, etc.) in your child's file if needed. In addition to the usual means of communicating with parents - phone calls, flyers sent home, etc. - the Elk Grove Unified School District now has the ability to communicate with parents and guardians through an email system that is integrated with our student information system. This system allows for increased district and school communication with parents about important information and events. It will also allow the district and schools to save money on paper and printing costs during these tough budgetary times. We understand that not all families have access to the Internet or email. Therefore, at this time, the emails will be an additional communication tool. Important information will continue to go home to parents in print format. If you have already submitted your email address to your child's school you should be receiving emails. You can make certain that the email comes through by adding the email address donotreply@egusd.net to your acceptable email addresses in your spam filter. If you would like to receive emails in the future, please contact your child's school to have your email address added to your student's registration information. Should you have questions about the email system, please contact communication@egusd.net.

Fuel up for school with breakfast at EGUSD
Did you know that according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), research suggests that eating breakfast can affect a child's intellectual performance? According to the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, participation in school breakfast is associated with improved math grades, attendance and punctuality.
The Elk Grove Unified School District is doing their part to ensure students can be at their best when they begin classes for the day through the school breakfast program. The program is now offered at all elementary, all middle, all comprehensive high and two alternative high schools throughout the district. Elk Grove Unified's breakfast program begins a half hour before the first school bell. The cost for elementary school students is $1.50 and $1.75 for secondary school students. Families who qualify for free and reduced priced lunches also qualify for breakfast at no cost. "Elk Grove Unified participates in the National School Lunch Program and our School Breakfast Program operates in the same manner as the lunch program," said Michelle Drake, director of Food and Nutrition Services for the district. "Our school breakfast meets the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans by providing an array of healthy selections for our students to choose from." Breakfast options for elementary and secondary students include fresh, whole grain muffins and bagels made daily in the district's full-scale bakery, a choice of fresh fruit, cereals, breakfast burritos, lumberjack French toast and sunrise sandwiches. Parents also have the option of pre-paying for their student's meals by using MyLunchMoney.com. This service allows parents to view student purchases, set spending limits and has the ability to send an email to alert parents when an account balance is low. Voluntary Athletic Contribution continues for 2011-2012 school year
The Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) has long been known for its excellent athletic programs. The district is proud of this reputation and recognizes that athletics support students' physical, social, and academic development. Unfortunately, due to the financial crisis in the State of California and the reduction of funding for public education, the district has been forced to cut an additional $160,000 from high school athletics. This adds up to a $2 million reduction to the district's athletic program over the past two years. Last year, a Parent Advisory Committee was formed to explore alternative financial options for supporting the district's athletic programs. As a result of the recommendations of this parent committee, as well as those of principals, athletic directors, and coaches, the Board of Education approved the implementation of a Voluntary Athletic Contribution (VAC) plan beginning in 2010-2011. The VAC plan will continue for the 2011-2012 school year. The purpose of the plan is to support EGUSD athletic programs and help offset district and school site costs associated with the potential reinstatement of any eliminated programs next year or in future years. The district encourages your help and support to ensure the success of the plan. The district is seeking to raise $300,000 in donations through the VAC plan. To accomplish this, every student-athlete is encouraged to contribute in support of the district's athletics under the VAC. The Parent Advisory Committee has determined the following suggested voluntary contributions per athlete for 2011-2012: First Sport - $150 Second Sport/Second Sibling - $125 Third Sport/Third Sibling - $ 100 VAC contributions are not mandatory. While a student will not be adversely affected in terms of her/his participation in the district's athletic programs should a family choose not to make financial contributions, neither will VAC contributions ensure a student's inclusion on a team or guarantee playing time. Families who wish to contribute more or less than the suggested amount or choose not to make a contribution may indicate so on the VAC form. All VAC contributions are tax-deductible. Students interested in participating in high school athletics will be provided a form along with other information about their participating in a sport.
More information about the district's budget reductions, athletic programs and the voluntary athletic contribution (including the form) can be viewed on the EGUSD website. Parents and community members interested in making an additional tax-deductible donation to athletics, please contact the EGUSD Fiscal Services Department at (916) 686-7797, extension 7663.

EGUSD students participate in
Elk Grove Optimist/Kohl's ChildSpree
On Saturday, July 30, more than 100 lucky Elk Grove Unified students enjoyed a $110 shopping spree to purchase back to school clothing at Kohl's on Bruceville Road at the Elk Grove Optimist/Kohl's ChildSpree. ChildSpree provides assistance for select students who are in need of school clothes, backpacks and school supplies in kindergarten through 5th grade. Students participating in the event are identified through the district's Healthy Start, Project Act and Foster Youth Services programs.
Beginning at 6 a.m., students happily entered Kohl's to shop with chaperones for new clothes. As an added bonus, Kohl's provided each student with a 10 percent discount.
After students finished shopping in the store, they were treated to many more surprises. Students and parents enjoyed a pancake breakfast, prepared and served by Elk Grove Lions Club and their members. Great Clips offered free haircuts for students. Each student received a backpack filled with school supplies, compliments of Soroptimist International of Elk Grove and United Grocers. The Children's Safety Coalition provided free booster seats and fire alarm batteries to families and the University of California, Davis distributed free bicycle helmets to the students. The EGUSD Healthy Start Program handed out free dental supplies and the Elk Grove Lions Club supplied their vision van for free eye exams.
"ChildSpree is a great opportunity for the community to give back to children and make a difference in their future," said Sandy Waite, a Healthy Start coordinator for the district. "The students remember this day for the rest of their lives."
Vendors and sponsors of the event included: Elk Grove Unified School District, Elk Grove Optimist, Kohl's, Elk Grove Lions Club, Elk Grove Rotary, UC Davis Hospital, California Highway Patrol, Elk Grove Police Department, Soroptimist International of Elk Grove, Sacramento Optimist Breakfast Club, Cosumnes CSD Fire Department, Lyon's Real Estate, Paula Maita, Great Clips, Trader Joe's, Double R DJ Entertainment, VFW of Elk Grove, Project ACT, Molina Health Care Systems, St. Mary's Episcopal Church and the Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance.
