Tdap Booster Shot required for incoming 7th-12th grade students

Incoming 7th through 12th graders will not be able to start school or get their class schedules for 2011-2012 until they have provided schools proof that they have received an adolescent pertussis (whooping cough) booster shot (Tdap).

Parents can turn in the proof throughout the summer at school offices.  To view school office summer hours click here.

The new California law goes into effect for the 2011-2012 school year following a widespread pertussis epidemic in 2010.  Pertussis is a serious disease that causes coughing fits that can last for months.  It can also be deadly for infants.

Please note that the tetanus-diphtheria booster shot (Td) does not meet the requirement of the law.  Students must have the Tdap booster to meet the requirements of the new law.

California law allows parents/guardians to exempt their child from the pertussis booster (Tdap) immunization for two reasons:  (1) medical (by way of letter from physician) or (2) personal beliefs.  The law does not allow parents/guardians to elect an exemption out of convenience.  The exemption form is available at the school and must be completed at the school of attendance.  If you have questions, contact the nurse or Health Records Assistant at the school.

After the 2011-2012 school year, only students entering 7th grade will need to show proof of having received the adolescent pertussis booster shot.

Elk Grove Elementary School students take third place at Physics, Science & Math Days at California's Great America

Three fifth grade GATE students from Elk Grove Elementary School placed third in the Balloon Powered Vehicle category at Physics, Science & Math Days at California's Great America on April 29th.  The students used park-supplied materials to create a vehicle with a balloon and compete against other entries.

Elk Grove Elementary GATE students in grades 3-6 prepared for the competition by studying basic physics concepts and measurement using accelerometers with a focus on the roller coaster.

Originally known as Physics Day when it began in 1983, Physics, Science & Math Days at California's Great America gives students from across the state the opportunity to see physics and other science concepts in motion through the variety of rides at the park and participate in science and math activities reflecting these concepts.

EGUSD teachers embark on
"Pilgrimage to Manzanar"

 Manzanar

Elk Grove Unified educators recently had the opportunity to experience World War II history firsthand during the 42nd Annual Pilgrimage to Manzanar.

Sponsored by the Florin Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and EGUSD's Teaching American History Grant - as well as funding from the State Library's 2010 California Civil Liberties Public Education Program - a select group of EGUSD teachers made the trek to Manzanar War Relocation Center, a Japanese internment camp used during World War II.

The pilgrimage began at the Manzanar National Historic Site.  After visiting the interpretive center, taking a tour of the latrines, gardens and barracks, and eating lunch in the Mess Hall, Elk Grove Unified teachers joined other visitors from across California and the United States at the camp's cemetery for a special program that included Taiko drumming and Japanese folk dancing.

Later in the evening, teachers continued the pilgrimage through the Manzanar at Dusk (MAD) program at Lone Pine High School.  College students served as facilitators for the MAD program activities.  Participants had the chance to listen and learn from personal stories of former internees through firsthand accounts, small group discussions and an open mic session.  MAD participants also had the opportunity to share their own experiences and discuss how the internment experience relates to the events and issues of today.

Sheldon High School band hosts
Twilight Music Camp

  TMC

School may be out for the summer, but for one week, the sweet melodic sounds of music still drifted across the Sheldon High School campus - thanks to the Twilight Music Camp, facilitated by the Sheldon High School Band.

"We chose to create the Twilight Music Camp to give students an opportunity to play more advanced music and to hear older students to get an idea of what they could become if they stick with their music education," said James Mazzaferro, band director at Sheldon.

The Twilight Music Camp has been held off and on for the past ten years at Sheldon.  Any student in grades 4-7 can participate.  Currently, there are approximately 20 Sheldon musicians assisting with the camp this year.  The young musicians work in small groups with Sheldon students throughout the week on fundamentals and advanced literature.  A final concert on their last day gives students a chance to showcase their newfound skills.

Mazzaferro has big plans for the camp in the future.

"I'd like to expand the number of students involved and have more students and coaches participate," said Mazzaferro. "It's a great experience for the younger students and gives our high school students the chance to coach and mentor younger musicians.  It's truly a win-win for all involved."

Mary Tsukamoto Elementary School students create care packages
for troops overseas

Tsukamoto

Although promotional ceremonies for sixth grade students are just around the corner, the Mary Tsukamoto Elementary School's sixth grade leadership team couldn't resist participating in one last community service project before making the leap to seventh grade.

Upon hearing that 3rd grade teacher Diana Van De Pol's son Max had been deployed to Afghanistan, the leadership students decided to hold a supply drive to collect much-needed items for Max and his fellow soldiers.

Students gathered a variety of items for the troops, including: toothpaste, toothbrushes, disposable razors, lotion, shampoo, soap, sunscreen, chap stick, Q-Tips, baby wipes, socks, t-shirts, books, crossword puzzles, word searches, comic books, pens, decks of cards, Uno cards, beef jerky, hard candy and trail mix.  Monetary donations were also collected to help with shipping costs.

The supply drive ended on Friday, June 10.

"I think our students did an amazing job collecting as many items as they could for the troops," said Patricia Hecht, vice-principal at Tsukamoto.  "These are everyday things that we all take for granted but could be considered luxuries for the troops.  In the end, we were able to collect enough items to fill 15 large boxes to be shipped to the troops in Afghanistan.  I am extremely proud of our very generous students and their families.  I know that these care packages will definitely be appreciated by our U.S. service men and women."

Elk Grove High School senior wins 2010/2011 Elk Grove Auto Mall
Graduating Seniors Attendance Drive

Although her senior year is over, Elk Grove High School graduate Melayne Alexander still had one more exciting event to look forward to.

As the winner of $20,000 in the 2010/2011 Elk Grove Auto Mall Graduating Seniors Attendance Drive, Alexander had the chance to purchase a vehicle from any dealer at the Elk Grove Auto Mall with her winnings - just for having at least one month of perfect attendance throughout the 2010/2011 school year.

After weighing her choices, Alexander selected a silver Toyota Corolla.

Alexander, along with nine other lucky graduating seniors, was selected to participate in the Senior Attendance Drive Grand Finale Event on May 11 in school site drawings.  Each month, seniors could earn entries in a drawing for a $20,000 grand prize throughout the year by having perfect attendance for that month.  Ten finalists - nine from each comprehensive high school and one representing all alternative high schools - were selected from amongst the entries to participate in the Grand Finale Event.

At the grand finale event, the ten finalists each selected car keys from a bag - only one key could start a car to claim the grand prize.  This year marks the fifth year the Elk Grove Auto Mall has donated the $20,000 grand prize - bringing the grand total donated to $100,000.

The nine runners-up were: Elizabeth Schneider (Cosumnes Oaks High School), Tai Huynh (William Daylor High School), Nancy Xiong (Florin High School), Nicholas Ruebel (Franklin High School), Gagandeep Saini (Laguna Creek High School), Justin Phan (Monterey Trail High School), Xochitl Orozco (Pleasant Grove High School), Kile Casto (Sheldon High School) and Jeanette Dominguez (Valley High School).

All runners-up received a $100 American Express gift card.
