New California immunization law for incoming 7th-12th grade students

A new California law now requires that all students entering 7th through 12th grade in the 2011-2012 school year provide schools proof that they have received an adolescent pertussis (whooping cough) booster shot (Tdap) prior to starting school.

Students will not be able to attend school in 2011-2012 until they show proof of the booster shot.

The new law was enacted following a widespread pertussis epidemic in 2010.  Pertussis is a serious disease that causes coughing fits that can last for months.  It can also be deadly for infants.

Once your student receives the Tdap booster shot, bring the written proof to the front office of your student's current school.  If your student has already received the Tdap booster shot, please bring a copy of the written proof to your student's current school.

The Elk Grove Unified School District is urging parents of current 6th through 11th graders to get the booster shot now to avoid the back-to-school rush this summer.  Please note that the tetanus-diphtheria booster shot (Td) does not meet the requirement of the law.  Students must have the Tdap booster to meet the requirements of the new law.

California law allows parents/guardians to exempt their child from the pertussis booster (Tdap) immunization for two reasons:  (1) medical (by way of letter from physician) or (2) personal beliefs.  The law does not allow parents/guardians to elect an exemption out of convenience.   The exemption form is available at the school and must be completed at the school of attendance).   If you have questions, contact the Nurse or Health Records Assistant at the school.

After the 2011-2012 school year, only students entering 7th grade will need to show proof of having received the adolescent pertussis booster shot.

EGUSD email Communication with parents

Did you know that the Elk Grove Unified School District  has the ability to communicate with parents and guardians through email?

The email system, which is integrated with our student information system, will allow for increased district and school communication with parents about important information and events.  It will also allow the district and schools to save money on paper and printing costs during these tough budgetary times.

We understand that not all families have access to the Internet or email.  Therefore, at this time the emails will be an additional communication tool.  Important information will continue to go home to parents in print format.

If you would like to receive emails in the future, please contact your child's school.  You can make certain that the email comes through by adding the email address donotreply@egusd.net to your acceptable email addresses in your spam filter.

Should you have any questions about the email system, please contact communication@egusd.net.

EGUSD schools participate in Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Collection

NikeShoeCollection

In honor of Earth Week 2011, 12 Elk Grove Unified schools are doing their part to make the world a cleaner - and greener - place by participating in the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe recycling program.  This year, the program is sponsored by EGUSD, the City of Elk Grove, Cosumnes Community Services District and Allied Waste.

During the month of April, select EGUSD schools will collect athletic shoes through the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Program to be recycled into materials to be used in creating basketball and tennis courts, athletic fields, running tracks and playgrounds.  The program also educates students about the importance of recycling and demonstrates an alternative to disposing used products in landfills.

The last day to donate shoes is April 29th.  Any brand of athletic shoes can be donated.  Shoes should be dry and not contain metal or cleats.  Dress shoes will not be accepted.

Shoe donations will be accepted at the following schools: Arthur C. Butler, Helen Carr Castello, Foulks Ranch, James McKee, Pleasant Grove, Joseph Sims and Stone Lake elementary schools, Katherine L. Albiani, Toby Johnson and Elizabeth Pinkerton middle schools and Laguna Creek and Pleasant Grove high schools.

STAR test goal setting program helps Foulks Ranch Elementary School students "shoot for the stars" on standardized tests

There's always room for improvement.

Staff members at Foulks Ranch Elementary School took this mantra to heart when creating STAR Test Goal Setting Conferences.  These conferences have taken place at Foulks Ranch for more than ten years.

Elk Grove Unified School District board members and administrators were invited to spend a morning speaking with Foulks Ranch students one-on-one about their personal goals for STAR testing this year.  Students sat down with adult mentors for about 3-5 minutes to discuss their performance last year on the STAR test and how they'd like to improve for this year's test.  The adult mentors were also encouraged to suggest test-taking strategies of their own for students to follow.

"We want students to feel proud of their efforts to do well on the STAR test and that others take interest in their success." said Mary Beth Kropp, principal at Foulks Ranch.  "We were looking for an 'outside-the-box' idea that would not only motivate our students, but also give them a way to express their excitement or any concerns they might have about their upcoming STAR test."

Foulks Ranch students on tracks A and B will have their chance to chat about their personal goals for STAR testing when they attend the STAR Test Goal Setting Conferences on May 12, 2011.

Harriet Eddy Middle School students make paper cranes to earn money for Japan earthquake victims

PaperCranes

Harriet Eddy Middle School joined young students worldwide in folding symbolic paper cranes to demonstrate their well wishes for Japan in the wake of their devastating earthquake and resulting tsunami that occurred on March 11, 2011.

The paper cranes created by Eddy students were donated to DoSomething.org for their "Paper Cranes for Japan" project.  DoSomething.org partnered with Students Rebuild on the project.  Students Rebuild will donate $2 for each paper crane to Architecture for Humanity's work with Japanese architects for their rebuilding efforts.

The paper crane project at Eddy was spearheaded by seventh grade student Catherine Nugent.  Nugent donated her time to fold paper cranes for decorations at the Eddy Sakura Celebration Dance Showcase on April 8.  Her cranes became the centerpiece decoration.  After the showcase, her peers joined her in the challenge to fold more than 100 paper cranes to donate to the cause.

"The Sakura Celebration was picked as the theme for the Dance Showcase because it symbolizes Japan's indomitable spirit of beauty and rebirth," said Diana Brooks, a science and technology teacher at Eddy who helped oversee the paper crane project.  "The crane is a symbol of peace and the 'Paper Cranes for Japan' project gave students an opportunity to donate to the rebuilding of Japan, even if in spirit.  The students proudly folded cranes of all sizes and colors.  It was a truly honorable experience."
