The Elk Grove Unified School District's kindergarten registration for children turning 5-years-old by December 2, 2011, will begin on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at modified traditional schools.
Parents with students already attending Elk Grove Unified schools receive sibling priority registration for track schedules. Of the district's 39 elementary schools, 10 are on a traditional schedule, 13 are on a modified traditional schedule and 16 are on a year-round schedule.
Kindergarten families registering their first child will have equal access based on date and time of registration. Most families who turn in their registration materials by the February 1, 2011 deadline will get into their home school.
Registration packets can currently be picked up at elementary schools on traditional and year-round schedules. Packets can be picked up at schools on a modified traditional schedule at 7:30 a.m. on January 4, 2011. Numbers for parents first in line will NOT be handed out at any of the district's schools.
To register a kindergartner, parents need to bring proof of residence in the form of a SMUD or PG&E bill, rental agreement, or purchase papers for a home. School office staff will give parents a packet, stamped and dated.
Registration materials including the packet, the child's immunization record, birth certificate and proof of residence are due by February 7, 2011.
Incoming kindergartners must live within Elk Grove Unified School District boundaries. To view district and school boundaries, call the Boundary Hot Line at (916) 686-7755 or go to http://www.egusd.net/new_to_egusd/boundaries.cfm.

EGUSD students earning Golden State Seal Merit Diploma continues to increase
Elk Grove Unified School District graduating seniors have achieved another academic milestone.
The total number of graduating seniors in the Elk Grove Unified School District who have earned the Golden State Seal Merit Diploma has continued to grow. This year, a total of 650 EGUSD seniors have qualified to receive the Golden State Seal Merit Diploma in comparison to 592 seniors who earned this distinction in the Class of 2010.
Issued by the California Department of Education each spring, the Golden State Seal Merit Diploma was established in 1997 to provide recognition to public school graduates who have demonstrated mastery of the high school curriculum in English, history, mathematics and science. Students qualify for the diploma by achieving high scores on six California Standards Tests (CSTs).
Students earning the Golden State Seal of Merit will receive special recognition in the form of an official insignia on their high school diplomas and an insignia on their transcripts. In addition, each student will receive a certificate of recognition personally signed by the superintendent and a letter from the superintendent congratulating them on their accomplishment.

EGUSD's A-G course completion rates continue to climb

The number of students completing A-G courses in the Elk Grove Unified School District has continued to climb steadily over the past three years.
The Class of 2007 amassed a 39.1 A-G course completion rate. The Class of 2008 raised that number to 40.5 percent. In 2009, 41.7 percent of the senior class completed A-G courses. By ethnicity, all student groups posted gains in A-G course completion, except the white student group which dropped by 0.1 percent. Pacific Islander and Filipino students demonstrated the greatest gains, posting 6.5 percent and 5.0 percent increases respectively.
EGUSD's 2009 A-G course completion rate also continued to be higher than the county and the state. The county's rate is 29.4 percent and the state's is 35.3 percent. High school counselors played a large role in the steady increase at Elk Grove Unified.
"In September of each school year counselors from each high school meet and conduct an "A-G" audit of their seniors in order to identify courses that are not being taken or completed with a C or better," said Ralph Robles, head counselor for the district in regards to EGUSD's efforts to increase A-G course completion rates. "We use this information during our yearly registration periods to impress upon all of our students the importance and need to fulfill the "A-G" requirement. When a student has received a D in an "A-G" course, we will have them make it up to attain a C or better. We have made it a priority to discuss the importance of taking "A-G" courses with parents, students and staff."
A-G requirements assure that students take the proper courses to make them eligible for admission in both UC and CSU systems. Fulfilling the requirements will also prepare students for admission to private colleges and community colleges.
The main purpose of the 'A-G' requirements is to ensure that a student can participate fully in the first year program at a UC school in a broad variety of fields of study. Fulfilling these requirements ensures that a student has put in the necessary preparation for different courses, majors and programs at a college. It also shows that a student has attained essential critical thinking and study skills.

Elk Grove High School TDA academy students help OTS and News 10
in "The Great Hang Up" campaign
Elk Grove High School's Technology and Digital Arts Academy (TDA) has partnered with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and News 10 for "The Great Hang Up" campaign. TDA students are working in teams to write, produce, shoot, edit and star in their own public service announcements (PSAs) about distracted driving.
The top three PSAs will be chosen by News 10 and OTS to be posted on News 10's website. The PSA receiving the most views will be shown on a live News 10 broadcast in early 2011.
"This was an incredible opportunity to give the students real world experience in taking an idea from inception and carrying it out to a finished product that is ready to be seen by the community and people of California," said Kent Pickering, TDA academy coordinator at Elk Grove. "The students had to use their problem solving skills and push their own critical thinking. By having to deal with the timeline and sequence of events necessary for this kind of project the students learned more about becoming productive young adults who are ready for the future."
TDA is designed for students interested in media advertising, digital photography and graphic design industries. Students learn photography, digital illustration, graphic design and filmmaking through this academy.
