Kindergarten Registration at EGUSD

The Elk Grove Unified School District's kindergarten registration for children turning 5-years-old by December 2, 2011, will begin on December 3, 2010, at traditional and year-round schools and on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at modified traditional schools.

Parents with students already attending Elk Grove Unified schools receive sibling priority registration for track schedules.  Of the district's 39 elementary schools, 10 are on a traditional schedule, 13 are on a modified traditional schedule and 16 are on a year-round schedule.  To view the calendars for all schedules, visit http://www.egusd.net/calendars/pdfs/10-11-YR_Calendar.pdf.

Kindergarten families registering their first child will have equal access based on date and time of registration. Most families who turn in their registration materials by the February 1, 2011 deadline will get into their home school.

Registration packets can be picked up starting at 7:30 a.m. on December 3, 2010, at elementary schools on traditional and year-round schedules.  Packets can be picked up at schools on a modified traditional schedule at 7:30 a.m. on January 4, 2011.   Numbers for parents first in line will NOT be handed out at any of the district's schools.

To register a kindergartner, parents need to bring proof of residence in the form of a SMUD or PG&E bill, rental agreement, or purchase papers for a home. School office staff will give parents a packet, stamped and dated.

Registration materials including the packet, the child's immunization record, birth certificate and proof of residence are due by February 7, 2011.

Incoming kindergartners must live within Elk Grove Unified School District boundaries. To view district and school boundaries, call the Boundary Hot Line at (916) 686-7755 or go to http://www.egusd.net/new_to_egusd/boundaries.cfm

EGUSD Virtual Academy now accepting enrollment for spring 2011 semester

EGVALogo

The EGUSD Virtual Academy is now accepting students in kindergarten through 12th grade for the upcoming spring semester. Enrollment for the spring semester will be open for a very limited time. Enrollment will close on December 10, 2010.

Parents interested in the program can attend a brief orientation and fast track enrollment meeting at 9 a.m., Tuesday, November 30, 2010, in the Board Room of the Robert L. Trigg Education Center, 9510 Elk Grove-Florin Road, Elk Grove, CA.

Student learning is directed by an adult at home, called a learning coach.  Learning coaches and students are guided by an EGUSD teacher.

Curriculum for the EGUSD Virtual Academy is provided by K12, a national online program. All courses in the academy are aligned to the State of California's standards and benchmarks.

The EGUSD Virtual Academy is a part of a free public education system.  Any student in grades K-12 in Sacramento County - along with students in the neighboring counties of Amador, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Placer, San Joaquin, Solano, Sutter and Yolo - is eligible to enroll in the EGUSD Virtual Academy.

Scholarship Information for Seniors

gradcap

For the Class of 2011, their final year of high school is nearly half over.  Most students have completed or are nearing the end of their college application process. However, the application process is not over for those hoping to obtain scholarships for their education beyond high school. Now is the perfect time for students to start searching for scholarships to help pay for their post-secondary education.

Last year, the Class of 2010 earned nearly $12.7 million in scholarships - an increase of almost $3.5 million from the Class of 2009 - and attended a variety of colleges and universities throughout California and across the country.

This year's seniors have a chance to improve upon the scholarship totals posted by the Class of 2010 and there are numerous places students can find scholarships that they are qualified for.

Locally, the Elk Grove Community Foundation awarded 161 scholarships for a total of $146,500 in 2009.  More information on the Elk Grove Community Foundation can be found at www.egcommunityfoundation.org.

There are also popular websites to help students look for scholarships.  Scholarships.com and FastWeb.com are search engines that gather information on scholarships from a variety of sources in one location.

Students should also search the financial aid section of a college's website for scholarship options as well. Many schools offer their own scholarships for admitted students. These scholarships are often sponsored through donations from a school's alumni.

EGUSD's College and Career website is also an excellent place to look for more information about scholarships. The website not only features scholarship information, but it also contains information for students hoping to earn athletic scholarships as well.

Mobile dairy classroom makes "mooooves"

to B.C. Morse Elementary School

Cow

On November 9 and 12, students at Barbara Comstock Morse Elementary got up close and personal with a real dairy cow at the Dairy Council of California's mobile dairy classroom assemblies.

The mobile dairy classroom assemblies bring a cow to schools throughout the state. The assembly teaches students about the anatomy of a cow, what a dairy cow eats and drinks and how milk gets from the cow to the milk containers in their homes. It integrates Language Arts, math and science while teaching students about agriculture's contribution to our food supply. The assembly also provides students with knowledge of healthy food and activity choices.

"We were very excited to have the Dairy Council's assemblies here at Morse," said Kilolo Umi, principal at Morse. "It's not every day that our students get a chance to see a cow so closely. The assemblies were an excellent tool to help reinforce what they are learning through their science lessons. It helps connect concepts to real life for them."

Valley High, Samuel Jackman Middle schools help elementary school students

"GEAR UP" for college

CAGEARUP

Throughout the months of October and November, Valley High School, Samuel Jackman Middle School and California Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program (GEAR UP) are reaching out to get elementary students excited about college at an early age through several rallies.

Students from Valley and Jackman have partnered with GEAR UP staff to increase 6th grade students' excitement about high school and awareness of college and post-secondary opportunities. The program's goal is to develop a sense in the elementary students that "I can go to college."

"While conducting the assemblies, students are excited as they hear about opportunities in high school and college," said Keven MacDonald, principal at Valley. "'Go to school, go to Jackman, go to Valley, go to college!' could be heard throughout the assemblies as the 6th grade students chant in unison. The real power is when current Valley students speak to the elementary kids. This allows our students reflect on how they have overcome challenges and are now in their senior year refining their plans for college."

The rallies include a visit from former Sacramento Monarchs' Ruthie Bolton, student speakers, a Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) flag salute and band and dance performances. The touring rally group will visit the five elementary schools that feed into Samuel Jackman Middle School and Valley High School before the end of 2010.  These include Herman Leimbach, Charles Mack, Prairie, John Reith and Union House elementary schools. The program is part of EGUSD's larger effort to encourage communication and articulation between neighborhood schools.

"The GEAR UP assemblies have empowered our students into believing that college is a strong possibility for them if they stay the course," said Fawzia Keval, principal at Prairie Elementary School.  "Hearing the message from their peers at Valley High School and Jackman Middle School is a wonderful way to drive home the importance of the message by hearing it from students and not adults."
