Jose and Rose Laur of
Mary Tsukamoto Elementary School

LaurFamily

Jose and Rose Laur were recognized as Education Partners at the September 21, 2010, meeting of the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education.

Four years ago, Rose Laur was one of the founding members of the Mary Tsukamoto Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and has served in a variety of leadership positions since.  With her assistance, the PTO has raised money to support Tsukamoto and has held a number of community-building activities, such as movie nights, family dances, parent information nights and a yearly school carnival.

Jose Laur also serves in many capacities at Tsukamoto. Laur is employed by Pepsi Cola and has been instrumental in initiating and supporting the adoption of Tsukamoto by the company. Each year, Pepsi donates products to assist in various activities for the Tsukamoto community. For the past three years, employees from the bottling plant have donated school supplies for distribution to the neediest children. Laur also serves on the School Site Council and served as chair last year.

In addition, the Laurs dedicate a significant amount of time to supporting teachers by copying, correcting and organizing items for their children's teachers. Last year, Jose Laur volunteered more than 100 hours of support in a 2nd grade classroom assisting students.

The Laurs have two daughters - Liliana, a 6th grade student at Tsukamoto and Isabella - a 3rd grade student at Tsukamoto.

Whooping Cough/Pertussis Information

California is currently experiencing an epidemic of pertussis (also known as whooping cough). While pertussis can cause a violent cough at any age, it can be deadly to infants. The Sacramento County Department of Public Health has asked school districts to assist in sharing information about pertussis with parents.

Pertussis starts out like a common cold and is often followed, within days, by severe coughing spells. It should be noted that infants may not cough and the disease may be milder in older children and adults. If you suspect that you, or anyone in your family, might have pertussis, you should seek medical care promptly.

Please note that there is a vaccine to protect against pertussis. Although people often receive the immunization between infancy and kindergarten, this protection wears off over time. A booster shot is recommended for all children and adults 10 years of age and older to help prevent getting pertussis, especially if there is a new baby at home or coming soon. Pertussis vaccines have been proven to be safe and effective. The most common side-effect is soreness at the injection site.

More information about pertussis can be found at www.cdph.ca.gov or www.sacdhhs.com.

Elk Grove High School hosts Middle School Leadership Conference

EddyBalloons1

It was 6 a.m. and already the agriculture barns at Elk Grove High School were abuzz with a flurry of activity.

The barns were the site of the 9th Annual Middle School Leadership Conference, facilitated by the Elk Grove High School Associate Student Body (ASB) Leadership students.

Over 400 middle school students attended the leadership conference held on Thursday, September 23. At the conferences, students attended workshops led by EGHS ASB students. The workshops included: publicity (sign-making); how to facilitate a meeting; effective delegation; and clear communication. Jerry Stackhouse from Jostens served as the keynote speaker. Stackhouse spoke to the students about leadership skills.

"It is so exciting to see all the middle school students being mentored by high school students," said Donna McNeel, activities director at T.R. Smedberg Middle School.

"Mr. Newton and his students at Elk Grove High do an amazing job inspiring and motivating the middle school students to step up and be leaders at their schools," McNeel said. "This conference not only inspires them, but my students walk away with hands-on skills to take back to Smedberg and use them immediately. It is a leadership conference that is a must!"

Student activity directors from the district's middle schools also had a chance to learn new things as well. While students learned in workshops, middle school activity directors met to talk about different ways to collaborate and support one another.
Roy Herburger Elementary School celebrates multiculturalism

HerbMulti

On September 16 and 17, the multipurpose room at Roy Herburger Elementary School resembled a miniature United Nations as students and staff presented their annual multicultural assemblies.

"The purpose of the assemblies is to celebrate the diversity of our school and help everyone feel welcome, no matter what their background is," said Indira Bhatti, vice-principal at Herburger. "The assemblies also help everyone understand that we are all equal and the differences between us make the world a better place."

Over 320 students participated in the multicultural assemblies. Each assembly began with a fashion show, with students dressed in traditional clothes representing 19 cultures. Then a total of 11 acts took to the stage to demonstrate different dances and songs from across the world, including: Indian and Punjabi dances; a Tinkling dance from the Philippines: the Cha Cha from Mexico; the Virginia Reel dance from the United States; a Hindi song; a vocal performance from Herburger's first grade students; and a surprise grand finale dance featuring the staff of Herburger performing a dance combining Hollywood and Bollywood.

Bhatti plans on doing even more with the assemblies in the future.

"I'd like to have the information letters that were sent home to parents translated into different languages so that there is more of a variety in performances from different cultures," said Bhatti. "To accommodate everyone we also want to have separate assemblies - one for parents of primary students and one for parents of intermediate students on different days. Our evening performance was quite popular as more than 1,000 parents came out to see the show!"

EGUSD announces 2nd Annual
Internet Safety Video Contest

isafety

The Elk Grove Unified School District, in collaboration with the U.S. Attorney's Office, is now accepting entries for the 2010 Internet Safety Video Contest. Students in grades 4-12 are invited to produce a public service announcement (PSA) video that promotes the safe and ethical use of the Internet.

The video contest is one component of Elk Grove Unified's Internet Safety Initiative. Internet safety is quickly becoming a top concern in today's society. The Internet Safety Initiative includes a three-pronged approach to include educating staff, parents and students about cyberbullying, online predator strategies and other safety tips.

The 2010 Internet Safety Video Contest presents an opportunity to reinforce topics included in the Internet Safety Initiative while allowing students to express their creativity. PSAs can be no longer than one minute. Time limit does not include video title and credits. Entries must be submitted as a DV-AVI file or a QuickTime-DV file. Entries will be judged on originality, technical components and clarity of the message.  Contest entries are due to the EGUSD Communications Department by Wednesday, January 5, 2011 by 5 p.m.

Winners will be notified by phone in January and awards will be given in three grade-level divisions - 4-6, 7-8 and 9-12 - at an awards ceremony at an EGUSD Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, January 18, 2011.
