Back to School = Update Your Information

As the new school year approaches, the time has come to update your child's information at their school site.  It is important that this information is up-to-date so you can be contacted in case of an emergency.  If needed, pPlease update general information (address, phone numbers, emergency contacts, etc.) in your child's file at the school's office.

In addition to the usual means of communicating with parents, the Elk Grove Unified School District now has the ability to communicate with parents and guardians through a new email system that is integrated with our student information system.

This new system will allow for increased district and school communication with parents about important information and events. It will also allow the district and schools to save money on paper and printing costs during these tough budgetary times.

We understand that not all families have access to the Internet or email. Therefore, at this time, the emails will be an additional communication tool. Important information will continue to go home to parents in print format.

EGUSD tested this new communication tool with two test emails in March. If you have already submitted your email address to your child's school you should have received the test email. You can make certain that the email comes through by adding the email address

donotreply@egusd.net to your acceptable email addresses in your spam filter.

If you did not receive the test emails in March, but would like to receive emails in the future, please contact your child's school to have your email address added to your student's registration information.

Should you have questions about this new email system, please contact communication@egusd.net.

Monterey Trail High School student earns scholarship to attend
U.S. Army engineering camp

Summayyah Wiggins, a junior at Monterey Trail High School, was the recipient of a full-ride scholarship to attend the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME)/Army Engineering and Construction Camp at Vicksburg, Mississippi in June 2010.

During the camp, Wiggins participated in hands-on engineering and construction activities designed to give students broad exposure to the profession.  The one-week program is supervised by professional engineers and volunteers from engineering organizations in the lower Mississippi Valley. The crewmates (campers) are exposed to a wealth of knowledge about the various career choices in the fields of engineering and construction, focusing primarily on water resources engineering.

New campus for Cosumnes River Elementary School

CRESDoves

On August 16, 2010, the Board of Education cut the ribbon that officially opened the new Cosumnes River Elementary School.  The opening of the school is a long-awaited event for the school district and community.

After almost 10 years of searching for an adequate site, the new Cosumnes River Elementary School was built to accommodate the growing elementary population in the eastern portion of the district.  The former school, completed in 1948, was no longer large enough to accommodate the children of Rancho Murieta and the rural communities in east Sacramento County.  The former school also lacked many of the core facilities, such as a multipurpose room.

Several sites were considered in the process of searching for a new site.  It wasn't until 2008 when the perfect match was found.  The Mosher/Ledbetter family offered to sell EGUSD the land adjacent to the former site.   This allowed the district to utilize the former site and incorporate it into the new site.  The same family had originally donated the land to the school district that the former school site sat on.  In gratitude to the Mosher/Ledbetter family, the school has asked the Board of Education to name the library the Lester and Faye Ledbetter Library.

The new school contains the first two story classroom building in Elk Grove Unified.  It also incorporates several "green" elements including natural lighting.  The site was built using facility funds, which can only be used for school construction.

The Elk Grove Unified School District community is grateful for the support of our community leaders in bringing this project to fruition.

Franklin Elementary, Sheldon High schools receive $2,000 each from Big Lots Lots2Give video contest

BigLots

Franklin Elementary School and Sheldon High School have each won $2,000 first place prizes in the Big Lots Lots2Give video contest.  The schools were recognized at two check presentations on Friday, August 13 at the Big Lots store in South Sacramento.

The Big Lots Lots2Give video contest asked schools to submit short videos and a brief essay explaining why their school is in need of financial support.  From June 7 to July 5, the public could vote for their favorite video online.  More than 200,000 votes were cast to determine the 46 winners, which include one $10,000 grand prize winner and 45 $2,000 first place winners from across the country.

Along with the Lots2Give video contest, Big Lots collected in-store donations to help 192 schools participating in the Lots2Give program. From April 26 through July 5, Big Lots customers were invited to make $1 or $5 donations at participating stores. Due to the generosity of the public, this initiative raised thousands of dollars to help participating schools.

Online credit recovery in EGUSD

Boy@Computer

The Elk Grove Unified School District is continually looking for new ways to help our students achieve their goals.  With state budget cuts impacting the district's ability to offer summer school, EGUSD staff has been creative in finding alternative means to help students attain the credits they need to graduate.

A successful program evolved through online education.  In January 2010, EGUSD launched a pilot online credit recovery program using the Apex Learning curriculum. From January through June 2010, 219 students have recovered credits through online classes offered in after school labs.

The district was able to use funds from the 21st Century High School After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens (ASSETs) grant and Microsoft Voucher dollars to fund the program.  Each EGUSD comprehensive high school offered 27-28 students at a time to take the program.  A total of 344 courses were taken overall, with a passage rate of 64 percent.

"In the Elk Grove district, we continually seek ways to support students' success," said Christina Penna, Associate Superintendent of Secondary Education.  "The APEX program offered students a unique option for credit recovery. While we are pleased by both our enrollment rate, as well as our percentage of passage, we remain committed to working with schools and students to maximize access and course completion."

EGUSD will continue to work on alternative ways for students to recover credits as we move through the budget crisis.  For more information about Apex Learning, click here.

EGUSD Offers "First in Math" Learning Resource

MathChalkboard

The Elk Grove Unified School District has a new online learning resource to help scaffold learning in math for students in kindergarten through 8th grade.  The "First in Math" electronic learning resource is a supplemental program that has been offered to the district at no cost for the 2010-2011 school year.

"First in Math" is an online supplemental tool for building students' speed and skill in basic calculations.  It is an innovative and web-based resource that aligns with state standards and those of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).  The basic arithmetic sense addressed by "First in Math" may assist students in their later development of mathematical reasoning and the conceptual understanding of mathematics that are critical to success in middle school and beyond.

The "First in Math" program appeals to students through a quick-paced game format. A student races against him/herself, which helps with skill and speed development.   The program offers a wide range of levels for both the student in need of extra assistance and the student who wants to accelerate in their learning.  Teachers will provide students log-in information that can be used both at home and in school.
