Furlough Days for 2010-2011 School Year On June 2, 2010 the Elk Grove Education Association (EGEA) informed the Elk Grove Unified School District that its members ratified a two-year collective bargaining agreement with the district. The agreement includes concessions that total about $23 million for each year. As part of the agreement, the teacher's association negotiated approximately $13 million in position restorations for each year. The remaining $10 million will assist the district with its $60.5 million state funding shortfall for 2010-2011 and again in 2011-2012. The agreement provides for the restoration of approximately 210 certificated positions including Elementary and Secondary Teachers, Secondary Counselors (29 already rescinded with 37 more restored), Secondary Librarians, 1 position per high school for 9th grade Class Size Reduction, some Adult Education and ROP Teachers and the continuation of secondary adjunct duty stipends. The concessions are for the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 school year. The concessions for each year include: 9 furlough days (5 instructional days plus 4 pre-service or professional development days); a suspension of the lottery checks; a column salary movement freeze; a salary reduction of about $4 million for the EGEA unit; a 10 percent athletic stipend reduction; an increase in health benefits co-payments and the elimination of dual coverage for spouses. The superintendent, associate superintendent, administrators and other members of EGTEAMS, as well as ATU and PSWA, have agreed to take concessions equivalent to those taken by EGEA members. EGUSD also continues its ongoing negotiations with all other employee associations. The school calendar has been adjusted to reflect the furlough days. To view the new calendar click "here." Copies of the calendar will be distributed through school sites.

Sixth Grade Student Leads Classmates in Anti-Bullying Campaign
Herman Leimbach Elementary 6th grader Kailuh Menefee delivered a powerful message to her fellow students. Stop bullying. Her message was a part of an after-school assembly that Kailuh created and then presented on June 16 to the after school programs at Leimbach Elementary.
Earlier this year, Kailuh was assigned the task of writing an essay about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s message and how it could affect the decisions she makes in her life. As part of her essay, Kailuh wrote, "In the fifth grade I'd look out the window of my dark room and see myself in a town of vacant buildings. I was in pain. I thought people wouldn't like me for myself. To mask the hurt I went around ridiculing people and telling them they were ugly. Now, I realize because of the bullying I've done I was on my own."
After submitting her essay to her teacher, Steve Webb, she decided to take the assignment one step further. Kailuh decided to take her message to her fellow students. With the encouragement of both Mr. Webb and teacher Erica Swift, Kailuh designed an assembly to help her peers understand more about bullying and inspire them to stand up to bullies and resist becoming bullies themselves.
"I was excited when Kailuh asked me to assist her in putting together the assembly," Swift said. "This assembly is an example of how students can serve as good role models and leaders for their peers. She is an impressive young lady. Her message was well received by the students and will hopefully have a lasting impact on them."
The assembly was presented to the two after school programs at Herman Leimbach, Sacramento START and ASES. Kailuh's goal is to help students understand different types of bullying, the causes of bullying and inspire students to make positive choices in how they treat others and react to those who treat them badly. The assembly included a presentation by Kailuh, skits performed by students and a presentation by Kevin Bracy, a motivational speaker from Life Changers International.
