Honoring Our Volunteers
Rihana Ahmad of Arlene Hein Elementary School

Rihana Ahmad was recognized as an Education Partner at the May 4, 2010 meeting of the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education. Ahmad formally joined the PTO Board at Hein this year as vice-president. When the PTO president moved out of the district, Ahamd did not hesitate to step up and become president. Under her leadership, the PTO has held many successful events, including the first annual Read-A-Thon. Ahmad also works as a Para-educator with the Foster Youth Program, supporting some of the neediest students weekly with one-on-one instruction that also includes nurturing and caring for their social and emotional needs. She provides instructional support to a fifth-grade newcomer who only speaks Vietnamese. She has had such an impact on this student that the student comes in for 45 minutes of instruction with Ahmad each morning - even when she is off-track. Ahmad is married to Khaalid Muttaqi. They have three children - Kaleemah, a 6th grade student at Hein, Ibrahim, a 3rd grade student at Hein and Yakeen, a kindergartner at Hein.

Valley High School holds 4th Annual Health & Fitness Expo

Messages about the importance of health and fitness were the central themes of the day at the 4th Annual Health and Fitness Expo, held at Valley High School on Wednesday, May 12th. Students and community members were invited to learn more about ways to keep themselves healthy through activities hosted by the students of the Valley High School CACHE program throughout the day. Visitors could participate in a variety of activities at the Health and Fitness Expo. In the gymnasium, informational booths featuring student projects as well as community groups and health organizations provided take-home materials to increase awareness about health and fitness. Outside of the gymnasium, students and community members could visit booths promoting healthy eating, as well as participate in physical activities, such as Zumba, Macumba and martial arts. The U.S. Army brought their popular rock wall for event attendees to climb and the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department brought their ladder truck to the event. "The Health Expo has been a tremendous success over the past four years," said Keven MacDonald, principal at Valley. "Through this event, the Valley High School Health TECH Academy has made a name for itself as a community leader in health advocacy. As a result, the Health Expo has continued to bring more opportunities for our students to promote health and fitness in our surrounding community."

Milk Rocks! Concert Tour comes to Prairie Elementary School
It's not every day a nationwide concert tour makes a stop at a local school. But that's exactly what happened at Prairie Elementary School when the Milk Rocks! Concert Tour made a stop on their campus on Wednesday, May 12th. Students in grade 3-6 were able to attend the concert. The Milk Rocks! Concert Tour features up-and-coming recording artist Britney Christian. She has also appeared in the feature film Hotel for Dogs and competed in Disney's High School Musical - Get in the Picture as a West Coast finalist. The Milk Rocks! campaign is a multifaceted, student-focused program that promotes the benefits of milk as a healthy alternative to sugar-based drinks. Milk Rocks! stresses the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle and promotes drinking milk in paperboard packaging. Prairie Elementary School was one of six Sacramento area stops for the Milk Rocks! Carroll Elementary School student makes fitness fun for her peers

If you see Talia Green on campus at Carroll Elementary School, one of the first things you'll notice about her is her seemingly endless amount of energy. So it makes perfect sense that Green volunteered to teach a Zumba-inspired fitness class to her peers. "When I first saw Talia working with her mom in a Zumba class, I knew we had a special talent," said Carroll principal Paul Hauder. "I asked her if she would be willing to teach-with a teacher sponsor, of course. She was excited and enthusiastic about the prospect. She did some 'demo' work at our lunch-times and had dozens of students join her on stage. We added the class to our afterschool enrichment program, 'Comet Academy' and Talia taught students for six weeks. It was very successful. I would do it again in a heartbeat!" Green, a 6th grade student at Carroll, taught a Zumba-inspired class through Comet Academy for six weeks on Wednesdays for one hour after school. She also earned community service hours for her efforts. "I really enjoyed working with the other students," said Green. "It made me happy to see how much they enjoyed the class." For students with different interests, there are plenty of other classes to choose from in Comet Academy, including Hand-Print Animal Art, Beginning Chess, Poetry, Greek Mythology, Dance X-Treme for Kids, Invention Dimension and Track & Field.
