Carroll Elementary receives $500 donation from Wells Fargo
wellsfargocarroll

Carroll Elementary School was recently selected to receive a donation from Wells Fargo bank as part of their "Adopt a School Program".  A $500 check was presented to Carroll principal Paul Hauder during a student of the month assembly on December 23.

The donation will be used to support Carroll's Accelerated Reading Academy.  The Accelerated Reading Academy encourages students to read at their level by providing progress monitoring comprehension assessment as well as incentives for achieving reading goals. During the awards assembly, students were being recognized for earning points and reaching grade level goals.

Wells Fargo and Wachovia banks are donating $500 to 340 schools across Northern California. A total of $170,000 will be distributed this year.  The money is intended to support school programs, and is especially welcome during these uncertain budget times for schools.  Wells Fargo and Wachovia also offer volunteer support and financial literacy programs to schools.

Sugar & Spice Club brings together girls for good at Pinkerton Middle School

sugarspiceEPMS

"Sugar and spice and everything nice" is how the old nursery rhyme goes.  The young ladies at Elizabeth Pinkerton Middle School that make up the Sugar & Spice Club are showing that they can do "everything nice" for others while having fun themselves.

"The Sugar and Spice Club at Pinkerton was created for new 7th grade girls to not only give them a venue in which to meet other girls on campus, but also as an opportunity to participate in fun group activities and community service," said Samantha Meyer, Sugar and Spice Club advisor at Pinkerton.  "The only criterion to join is to be a 7th grade girl."

This year is the first year for the club at Pinkerton and it already has approximately 55 members.

"We usually try to do one or two activities per month, which includes one community service experience and one group activity," said Meyer.

Club members have participated in pumpkin carving, a movie night, a trip to The Commons retirement facility to participate in arts and crafts, games and a sing-a-long with the residents and a bake sale to raise money to purchase gifts for a family they adopted for the holidays.

Meyer is thrilled with the early success of the club and has big ideas on how to continue to improve on the club's concept.

"My main goal is to have the club continue to grow so that the girls always have a safe and fun atmosphere to hang out in where they can meet their peers, socialize with one another and make a difference in the community," said Meyer.

Community Board Meetings
 February 2, 2010

Community members will have an opportunity to ask questions and get answers from EGUSD board members on February 2, 2010, at Community Board Meetings. Each year, EGUSD's seven trustees hold individual meetings at seven school sites.

The meetings offer an opportunity for parents, students, staff and community members to get an update about the district, learn about how the state budget is affecting EGUSD and ask questions. The meetings will also feature a student performance or presentation.

The meetings are from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Trustees will hold meetings at the following locations:

  • Monterey Trail High School
  • Joseph Sims Elementary School
  • Elitha Donner Elementary School
  • Cosumnes Oaks High School
  • Samuel Kennedy Elementary School
  • Prairie Elementary School and
  • Robert J. Fite Elementary School.
If you have any questions about the meetings, please contact the EGUSD Communications Department at (916) 686-7732 or communication@egusd.net.

Stone Lake Elementary School student wins EGUSD Spelling Bee

spellingbee2009

Kajal Maran, a sixth grade student at Stone Lake Elementary School, won the 12th Annual EGUSD Spelling Bee December 8, at the Robert L. Trigg Education Center.

Maran and runner-up Adrianne Llamado, a fourth grader at Roy Herburger Elementary School, received trophies.

The Elk Grove Unified Spelling Bee began in the 1998-1999 school year. Elementary and middle schools are required to host their own spelling bees to determine a winner to represent the school at the district event.

Every school site is eligible to send its champion to the Central Valley Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Scripps National Spelling Bee, if the school has pre-enrolled. The district spelling bee has no formal bearing on the regional spelling bee. The district spelling bee serves as practical experience and mirrors the Central Valley competition.
