Honoring our Volunteers

Tricia Hudick of
Florin High School

triciahudick

Tricia Hudick was recognized as an Education Partner at the September 1, 2009 meeting of the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education.

Since 2000, Hudick has been involved with the band programs at both James Rutter Middle Schools and Florin High School.  Hudick began her volunteerism by helping with spaghetti feeds at Rutter with her son Henry and continued with helping to run a fireworks booth for the Florin Band Boosters, even after Henry's graduation in 2005.  In December 2003, she resurrected the Florin Band Booster organization - serving as the group's treasurer until August 2007.  Thanks to her tireless fundraising efforts, the band was able to purchase new uniforms.

Hudick is known for her upbeat personality and always brings smiles and laughter to booster meetings and events.  Although Hudick's two other children - Caitlyn, a freshman at Florin and Paul, a seventh grader at Rutter - are not involved in the band program, she has continued to assist with fundraisers and other events for the Florin Band. Without her assistance and dedication, the Florin Band Boosters would be unable to support the band program and expand music programs in the Florin region.

Smithsonian Scholars share ideas on social media and environmental conservation with high school students

smithsonianscholar

Two Smithsonian experts met with students and faculty on September 9 and 10 at five Elk Grove Unified high schools to discuss the use of new technologies in the fields of social media and environmental conservation, within the Smithsonian Institution.

The "Ford Smithsonian Scholars in the Schools" program came to Elk Grove Unified School District thanks to a partnership between the Smithsonian Institution and Ford Motor Company Fund, the community relations and philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company.

Smithsonian Scholar Marc Bretzfelder serves as the Streaming Media Webmaster for the Smithsonian Institution. He assists the museum's streaming events on the Web and develops a social presence to promote their efforts through social networking sites such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.  Bretzfelder presented students with an overview of the Smithsonian's efforts in social media, explaining how Smithsonian units from A to Z - beginning with the Astrophysical Observatory to the Zoo - are establishing their presence on social networks.

Joining Bretzfelder was David Hauk, Energy Management Branch Chief of the Smithsonian Institution, responsible for the Smithsonian's efforts to make its buildings more sustainable through energy and water conservation projects. During his presentation, Hauk described current Smithsonian green-building projects and presented a detailed case-study of a recent project that provided $20 million in energy efficiency improvements for the National Museums of American History and Natural History.

The Smithsonian worked closely with Elk Grove Unified School District in the design of the program and topics covered in order to ensure that they match with current classroom learning and skill level.

The five high schools where the scholars made presentations - Monterey Trail, Laguna Creek, William Daylor, Valley and Florin - are currently using the Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies (Ford PAS) curriculum. Ford PAS is an academically, rigorous curriculum taught through the lens of a career. The program helps to prepare students for college and high-wage, high-skills fields such as business, engineering, technology, alternative energy, global economics and other challenging fields. The curriculum is supported through professional development for teachers and networking opportunities between business partners, educators and students. Ford PAS was developed by Ford Motor Company Fund in partnership with Education Development Center, Inc. It is currently being used in 400 sites across 27 states.

EGUSD welcomes four new academies

students

Elk Grove Unified's goals go beyond the classroom and reach into the future of our students.  The district strives to guide each student toward a college or career.  Through small learning academies we offer our students the ability to specialize in a number of career fields - including public service, business, health, engineering, technology, ag-science, auto-technology, education and media.

In an effort to expand upon career academies offered, four new career academies have been added this school year: the Agriculture Sales and Service Academy (ASSA) at Elk Grove High School, the Law and the World Academy (LAW) at Florin High School, the Green Renewable Energy Engineering Network Academy (GREEN) at Franklin High School and the Green Energy Technology Academy (GETA) at Laguna Creek High School.

All four programs are California Partnership Academies funded by state grants.

Agriculture Sales and Service Academy at Elk Grove High School

This academy is designed for students interested in agricultural sales and service.  Students learn the fundamental concepts of agriculture, including sales, purchasing, inventory and delivery of merchandise, advertising, animal nutrition and health.

Law and the World at Florin High School

This academy connects students with the growing legal industry.  LAW prepares students for three possible career paths in the law: Legal Assistant (paralegals), Justice and Advocacy (court reporters, clerks, interpreters) and The Law (attorneys, diplomats, legislators, elected officials).

Green Renewable Energy Engineering Network at Franklin High School

This academy allows students to explore renewable sources of energy through engineering and core academic courses.  The GREEN Academy encourages academic achievement and environmental awareness while developing an understanding of ecological issues.

Green Energy Technology Aacademy at Laguna Creek High School

This academy is for students interested in the energy industry.  They will learn about solar energy, wind turbines, photovoltaics, biodiesel, hydroelectricity and hydrogen fuel cells.

Elk Grove Unified works closely with the business community through our career academies.  These relationships with the business community provide the district's students with real world training through internships.

Students in career academies are assigned to a team of teachers and participate in integrated academic and career/technical courses related to a career focus area.  A career academic sequence includes progressive exposure to the world of work learning to a certificate recognized by businesses and industry.  A career academy is flexible, but it is structured with a 9-12 grade sequenced, integrated course of study.  Employers are engaged in the academy process through mentoring, job shadowing, and participation in advisory meetings.
