Sydney Ann Ricks of
Edna Batey Elementary School

ricksphoto

Sydney Ann Ricks was recognized as an Education Partner at the August 18, 2009 meeting of the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education.

Ricks has been a student at Edna Batey Elementary School since kindergarten.  She is currently a fifth grade student at Batey.

During her fourth grade year, Ricks was presented with an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those with cancer.  A close friend of hers was diagnosed with a brain tumor and has been undergoing specialized treatment in Boston.  In addition, her uncle passed away due to cancer this year.

As a result, Ricks was inspired to find a way to donate money towards finding a cure.  After approaching Batey's administration and receiving approval, Ricks initiated the Coins for the Cure fundraiser at her school.  She encouraged the classes to donate spare change towards finding the cure in honor of her friend and uncle.  After many hours of counting change, Sydney was able to represent her school at the Elk Grove Relay for Life and donated $1,318 to the American Cancer Society in hopes of finding a cure.

Ricks has pledged to continue her efforts - possibly expanding the fundraiser to more schools - and hopes to make a Relay for Life team this year to earn more money towards this worthy cause.

Budget Update

budgetwatch

The Elk Grove Unified School District's budget committee has resumed the work of identifying $40 million in ongoing cuts for 2010-2011 school year. The reduction of $40 million is on top of $17 million in one-time and $27 million in ongoing budget cuts that the Elk Grove Unified School District had to make for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years.

The 45 member budget committee is comprised of district administrators, principals and union representatives. This year parent representatives serving on the district's finance committee also joined the budget committee. The committee is being asked to look at budget reductions through the following four lenses:
  • Keep people before things
  • Safety and security is a top priority
  • Maintain cleanliness
  • Academic programs and services
The committee was presented with a 2010-2011 budget development list of $40 million in ongoing, non-negotiated, possible reductions. Click here to see the list. The list does not include a number of items that must be negotiated with EGUSD's labor organizations.

EGUSD Superintendent Steven M. Ladd, Ed.D, who is facilitating the meetings, made it clear to the committee that the list represents a starting point in the conversation only and was not final but underscored that cuts must be made. It will be the work of the committee to refine the list with input from the staff, parents and community members.

In the case of the possible reductions to the athletic budget, an Athletic Budget Reduction Team was formed to identify $800,000 in possible reductions. The committee has looked at possible reductions through the following lenses:
  • Quality of each site Athletic Department
  • Title IX Equity
  • Equity amongst all schools - no booster funded programs
  • Safety of student-athletes/coaches/spectators
  • Ability to sustain varsity programs - don't eliminate multiple levels of a sport
  • Percentage/number of students affected by modified or eliminated sports
To see a draft list of budget cuts identified by the Athletic Budget Reduction Team, click here.

In September, Superintendent Ladd will begin visiting school sites to speak with staff members about the district budget. In addition, in October the district will hold a series of community forums to invite parents, staff and students to join the discussion, present ideas and ask questions. Dates for the October meetings will be announced in September.
Keep yourself healthy during upcoming flu season

handwashing

School is back in session and the flu season is rapidly approaching.  The arrival of the H1N1 virus has pushed the significance of using proper hand washing techniques and upper respiratory etiquette to the forefront. To help stop the spread of germs, remember to keep these helpful hints in mind:

Proper Hand-Washing Procedures

  1. Wet hands with running water
  2. Place soap in palms
  3. Rub together to make a lather
  4. Scrub hands vigorously for 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing 'Happy Birthday' twice)
  5. Rinse soap off hands
  6. Turn off the faucet by using a disposable paper towel (if possible)
  7. Dry hands with a disposable paper towel. Do not dry hands on clothing.

***Assist young children with washing their hands.  Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can be used if soap and water cannot be made available.

Proper Upper Respiratory Etiquette

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
  • Put your used tissue in the waste basket.
  • Clean your hands after coughing or sneezing.

If you have any questions or concerns about the H1N1 virus, please contact Sacramento County Public Health at (916) 875-5881 or find information on their website at www.scph.com.

TEEN TRUTH LIVE: Bully program comes to Sheldon High School

teentruthlive

Students at Sheldon High School had the chance to discuss the issues of bullying and conflict prevention through the TEEN TRUTH LIVE: Bully program on Thursday, August 27.

TEEN TRUTH LIVE: BULLY is an interactive, multi-media presentation that incorporates motivational speeches with a 22-minute film that was created by students. The film, TEEN TRUTH: BULLY, focuses on teen social issues that can lead to conflicts.  The motivational speeches challenge students to think about how their reactions impact the lives of those around them.

"This year, Sheldon High School hopes to reach the complete potential of our campus through the inclusion of every individual and embrace the diversity of the Sheldon campus community," said Amrit Sahota, ASB Academics Commissioner at Sheldon.  "We hope TEEN TRUTH LIVE will help challenge our students to have a positive impact on their peers in order to make our school a safer, healthier, happier place."

The program was brought to Sheldon by their Associated Student Body (ASB) students.  Sheldon's ASB was able to bring the program to their school for free by completing an application process.
