New Staff
Appointment at EGUSD

The Elk Grove Unified School District's Board of Education has appointed a new Associate Superintendent of Human Resources.

Glen De Graw was appointed the new Associate Superintendent of Human Resources at the June 9, 2009 board meeting.  De Graw is joining EGUSD from the Roseville Joint Union High School District where he currently serves as the Associate Superintendent of Personnel Services.  He has served in a variety of positions in public education, including as a teacher, a vice-principal and a high school principal before making the move to human resources.
New calendar changes for 2009-2010 school year

The Elk Grove Unified School District's traditional school year for 2009-2010 will start one week earlier than in the past.  The change is the result of an agreement between EGUSD and the Elk Grove Education Association to modify the traditional school calendar in 2009-10 and 2010-11.

Under the proposal, the school year at all traditional schools will start one week earlier in August and afford a two-term model in which the first term ends prior to the winter holiday break and the second term ends prior to the Memorial Day weekend.

Central to this modification was a strong interest by teachers at the secondary level to administer first semester finals prior to the winter break rather than suspending instruction, review, and the administration of final examinations until after a two-week vacation.

We wanted you to be aware of the changes to the traditional calendar for planning purposes.  We are optimistic that this new model at our traditional sites will be well received and look forward to evaluating the change over the next two years.

50th Anniversary Celebration comes to a close with Time Capsule Sealing Ceremony

Time Capsule Sealing Ceremony

The Elk Grove Unified School District concluded their year-long 50th Anniversary Celebration with a Time Capsule Sealing Ceremony held on Tuesday, June 9th at the Robert L. Trigg Education Center.

Over 250 people attended the event.  The celebration began with a musical performance by the Pleasant Grove High School Jazz Band.  Next EGUSD Superintendent Dr. Steven M. Ladd was joined by EGUSD Board President William Lugg, Jr. to welcome attendees to the event.  Following the welcome, the Florin High School and Valley High School Jr. ROTC units presented the colors as Ryanna Declines, a 2009 graduate of Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School, lead the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Following the pledge, 2009 Laguna Creek High School graduate Sean Nill sang "America the Beautiful."

Several resolutions and proclamations were presented to the district in honor of the 50th Anniversary Celebration.  Michelle Panos, representing U.S. Congressman Dan Lungren, presented a resolution on behalf of the congressman.  Christopher Flores, representing U.S. Congresswoman Doris Matsui, read the message Matsui read into the congressional record in Washington D.C. recognizing and congratulating the district on 50 years of educational excellence.  Resolutions and proclamations were also presented from the California State Senate and Assembly, Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, the City of Elk Grove and the Cosumnes Community Services District.

Following the presentation of proclamations and resolutions was the crowd-pleasing performance of the gold-medal winning Oral Language Faire verse choir group from Elitha Donner Elementary School.  The students prepared a special presentation in honor of the district's 50th Anniversary.  The performance included a variety of important people, places and events from throughout the district's history.

Finally, Robert Pierce, associate superintendent of facilities and planning, invited Arlene Hein, as well as Ladd, Lugg, former EGUSD superintendent Robert L. Trigg and Pleasant Grove High School student Chris Utterback to help him unveil the time capsule and its structure.  The group lowered and sealed the time capsule into the structure.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, attendees were invited to view the time capsule structure up close.  "Save the Date" cards were passed out to all in attendance, inviting them to return to the Education Center in 50 years on June 9, 2059 for the official opening of the 50th Anniversary time capsule at the district's centennial celebration.

Groundbreaking Ceremony held for the new Cosumnes River Elementary School

Groundbreaking

On Monday, June 15, 2009, the Elk Grove Unified School District's Board of Education broke ground on the new Cosumnes River Elementary School site.  The site is immediately adjacent to the current school in Sloughouse, in the eastern rural area of the district.

The construction is scheduled to be complete in time for the new school to open in the fall of 2010.  The school is being built to accommodate an expanding student population that has outgrown the current campus. The new campus will provide the students of Cosumnes River Elementary School the same essential facilities and space of other EGUSD elementary schools.  Unlike the existing campus, the new school will have a full size library, multi-purpose building, kindergarten complex, extended parking areas and adequately sized hard top and play fields for recreation.

The current Cosumnes River Elementary School was opened in 1948 near the site of the original Rhoads School. The original Rhoads School was built in the 1840's by Jared Dixon Sheldon on a bluff along the Cosumnes River.  It is considered to be the first school built within the 320 square miles that are now part of Elk Grove Unified School District's boundaries.

The original school was replaced in 1872 by the new Rhoads School, which is today a museum located in Elk Grove Park. Cosumnes River Elementary School was built as part of the merger of three schools: Michigan Bar, Wilson and Stone House.
