Florin High School students shine in TrigStar program

trig

Parabolas.  Inverse tangents.  Complex modulus.  Arcsine, arccosine and arctangent.

Although these terms might seem intimidating to some, trigonometry students at Florin High School feel right at home.  These students recently competed in the TrigStar Program competition, sponsored by CalTrans.  On May 20, 79 Florin students were recognized at an awards ceremony for competing in the contest.

The TrigStar Program is an annual high school mathematics competition based on the practical application of trigonometry.  The program recognizes the best trigonometry students from high schools throughout the nation.  Students have the chance to compete at three different levels: local, state and national.  At the national level, the contest is sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors.  Winners at the national level can earn monetary awards.

"This competition is wonderful because it gives students the opportunity to see math attached to the real world," said Ken Smith, mathematics teacher at Florin.  "It presents an excellent way to acquaint high school trigonometry students with the use and practical application of trigonometry in the surveying profession."

Smith is optimistic about the program's future at Florin.

"The 79 students who participated in the program this year is triple the number that have participated in the past," said Ken Smith. "Each year, we'd like to keep growing the program's participation on our campus and hopefully our scores as well."

Florin High School hosts 12th Annual Florifare

Each year, the Future Farmers of America (FFA) at Florin High School, in partnership with the Elk Grove Unified School District, hosts the annual Florifare at Florin High School.  This year marks the 12th year of the event.

On Monday, June 8, third grade students from across the district attended Florifare.  The event provides a medium for Florin FFA students to introduce their younger counterparts to agricultural experiences.  Over 1,000 elementary school students, teachers and community members visited Florin's campus during this annual event.

"It is the Florin High School Agriculture Program's goal to offer the Elk Grove Unified School District's elementary students an exciting hands-on learning activity while experiencing what we consider to be California's most important industry - agriculture," said Amy Spithorst, FFA advisor at Florin.

Over the course of a day, FFA and Agriculture Education students became the "teachers" as they enhanced and shared their knowledge while increasing agricultural literacy for students and guests.  Elementary school students had the opportunity to tour a variety of agricultural exhibits, including Aquaculture, Floriculture, Horticulture, Large and Small Livestock, Poultry Species and Agriculture Careers/Commodities.

In addition to the agricultural exhibits, visitors were able to view pigs, calves, goats, horses, sheep, fish and rabbits.

"It's our hope that even in these tight budget times, we'll be able to keep the program going for next year," said Sheila Folan, FFA advisor at Florin.  "We are considering moving Florifare to September next year so all of our elementary schools - year-round and traditional - will have a chance to attend the event.  Our students and agriculture teachers really enjoy hosting the event for our district's third grade students."

Sheldon High School senior wins Elk Grove Auto Mall Graduating Seniors Attendance Drive

EGAMGSAD2009

On Wednesday, May 27, the 2008/2009 Elk Grove Auto Mall Graduating Seniors Attendance Drive came to a dramatic conclusion at the Grand Finale Event.  Nine lucky graduating seniors had the chance to try their luck at winning $20,000 to purchase a vehicle from any dealership at the Elk Grove Auto Mall.

For the third year in a row, the Elk Grove Auto Mall provided a $20,000 grand prize for a graduating senior with perfect attendance for at least one month.  Students earned entries for each month of perfect attendance throughout the 2008/2009 school year to earn the chance to win the grand prize.

Nine finalists - eight from each comprehensive high school and one representing all alternative high schools - were selected from amongst the entries to participate in the Grand Finale Event.

At the grand finale, the nine finalists selected car keys from a box - only one key could start a car.  Sheldon High School senior Rachel Anderson chose the lucky key and after a short drum roll - provided by Pleasant Grove High School's drum line - Anderson started a teal Nissan Cube to claim the $20,000 grand prize.

The runners-up were: Sheetal Kumar (Calvine High School), Michael Cascio (Elk Grove High School), Laura Ballesteros (Florin High School), Cynthia Lu (Franklin High School), Ryan Tamayo (Laguna Creek High School), Bradley Bravo Briones (Monterey Trail High School), Brittney Friello (Pleasant Grove High School) and Avneet Singh (Valley High School).

All runners-up received a $100 American Express gift card.
