New calendar changes for 2009-2010 school year

The Elk Grove Unified School District and the Elk Grove Education Association have agreed to modify the traditional school calendar in 2009-10 and 2010-11.

Under the proposal, the school year at all traditional schools will start one week earlier in August and afford a two-term model in which the first term ends prior to the winter holiday break and the second term ends prior to the Memorial Day weekend.

Central to this modification was a strong interest by teachers at the secondary level to administer first semester finals prior to the winter break rather than suspending instruction, review, and the administration of final examinations until after a two-week vacation.

We wanted you to be aware of the changes to the traditional calendar for planning purposes.  We are optimistic that this new model at our traditional sites will be well received and look forward to evaluating the change over the next two years.

Valley High School hosts 3rd Annual Health & Fitness Expo

VHSHealth

For the third year in a row, Valley High School brought health and wellness to the greater EGUSD community on May 15 with the annual Health and Fitness Expo.

Valley High School's Health TECH Academy has annually led this event by reaching out to local vendors and the community for support.  This year's vendors included Kaiser Permanente, HealthNet, Sutter, American Health Care, 24-Hour Fitness, Market Smart, California Family Fitness, Never A Victim, California State University, Sacramento nursing program, Vitamin Shoppe, American Heart Association, Enloe Medical Center, Complete Health and Healing, People Reaching Out, Cover the Kids, Alzheimer's Association, VSP and the U.S. Army brought their popular rock wall.

Staff, students, parents and community members attended the event where they learned about a number of resources in the community.  EGUSD's Food and Nutrition Services also participated in the event with booths promoting healthy eating.

"The Health Expo has been a tremendous success," said Keven MacDonald, principal at Valley.  "Through this event, the Valley High School Health TECH Academy has really begun to establish itself as a community leader in health advocacy.  As a result, the Health Expo has continued to bring more opportunities for our students to promote health and fitness in our surrounding community."

Foulks Ranch Elementary School and Laguna Creek High School win Nike Shoe Recycling Challenge

Elk Grove agencies are turning trash into treasure, and have collected nearly 3,000 pairs of athletic shoes during the annual Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program.  That's more than enough to surface an outdoor basketball court, playground or tennis court.

Allied Waste collected used athletic shoes from 24 schools in the Elk Grove Unified School District, eight Cosumnes CSD locations and from the City of Elk Grove for two weeks in April. The collective effort will keep three tons of athletic shoes out of the region's landfills.

Schools competed for a $1,000 cash prize for collecting the largest quantity of shoes.  Foulks Ranch Elementary School placed first in the elementary school competition, and Laguna Creek High School won the middle and high school competition, collecting 8 carts and 7.5 carts of athletic shoes respectively.  Each school will be awarded their winnings from Allied Waste at the Elk Grove City Council Meeting on May 27 at 6 p.m.

"For two years in a row the students and staff at Laguna Creek High School have done a fabulous job in collecting shoes for this program.  Much of the credit goes to Art Teacher, Diedre Ferrari and ILS Teacher, Jan Stendahl.  Their passion for recycling has spilled over to the rest of our students and staff," said Laguna Creek High School Principal Doug Craig.

EGUSD goes to the River Cats game

 DrLaddRiverCats

EGUSD continued its celebration of 50 years of educational excellence on May 15 at Raley Field.  At the Friday night baseball game, the Sacramento River Cats honored the district's anniversary in conjunction with EGUSD's Service Learning program.

As part of the celebration Superintendent Steven M. Ladd, Ed.d., EGUSD service learning student Ashley Russell, from Katherine L. Albiani Middle School, along with Galt service learning student Jessica Utile had the opportunity to throw the honorary first pitches of the game.  In addition, Elitha Donner Elementary 6th grader Reyna Armour sang the national anthem.  EGUSD service learning students also had the opportunity to parade around Raley Field and participate in games during the 7th inning stretch.

The River Cats game was the second to last event in a year-long celebration of the district's rich history.  EGUSD's 50th anniversary celebration will come to a close on June 9 with the Time Capsule Sealing Ceremony at the Robert L. Trigg Education Center.  The ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the flagpole area.
The Time Capsule Sealing Ceremony will serve as the concluding event for the 50th Anniversary Celebration.  The time capsule will include documents and items from the district as it is today, popular items of the present, as well as pieces representing various events from throughout the 50th Anniversary Celebration.

GATE students learn how to research at
Elk Grove Elementary School

The intelligence and ingenuity of students involved in the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program at Elk Grove Elementary School were on display at GATE Celebration Day on May 22.

GATE students at Elk Grove have been working on research projects as a part of their GATE curriculum.  Throughout their research, students were encouraged to explore a variety of research options.  GATE Celebration Day was created to showcase the end results of the students' projects.

"Given that they have high IQs and can work two grade-levels beyond their current grade, I thought it would be appropriate for them to experience scholarly work presented in other media besides the Internet," said Bill Ward, vice-principal at Elk Grove.  "Books and professional journals are excellent resources for research on a topic and an area of interest."

To assist with the research projects, three field trips were planned to visit the California State University, Sacramento library where students were able to use the electronic catalog to find sources for research.  A sleepover to the Monterey Bay Aquarium was added to bring depth and breadth.

After researching their topics, the next part of the research project was to create a PowerPoint presentation showcasing the results of their research through the "compare and contrast" or "cause and effect" critical-thinking lenses.  Their final project was presented to parents and EGUSD leaders at GATE Celebration Day.

"We were particularly overwhelmed and impressed by the quality and depth of the PowerPoint presentations," said Ward.  "It's amazing to see what happens when you raise the bar and your students eagerly reach up and grab it."
