| Honoring Our Volunteers
Venice Williams of
William Daylor High School
Venice Williams was recognized as an Education Partner at the April 14, 2009 meeting of the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education. For the past four years, Venice Williams has been an active and faithful volunteer at William Daylor High School. She has been volunteering at Daylor since 2005 when her oldest daughter began attending the school. When Williams discovered her twin daughters having difficulty with their studies at Florin, she made the decision to have them attend Daylor. Williams regularly communicates with clerical staff and counselors regarding the progress of her students. Through her support and positive enforcement of the school's academic standards, her children have been able to stay focused, improve their attendance and receive academic recognition. Williams is also a member of Daylor's Parent Community Advisory Group and played a significant role in the student leadership talent show this year. |

Elementary school students to study asparagus as the Harvest of the Month
Throughout the 2008-2009 school year, boxes of fresh fruit and vegetables have arrived on various elementary school campuses across the district each month. The month of April is no exception - this month, students are exploring the wonders of asparagus. Students will taste-test asparagus spears in a raw state, making observations about the differences between the tip, center and end of the spear. The students will also prepare an asparagus with lemon and parmesan recipe in class. The asparagus recipe will be sent home with students, along with buying and storing tips, nutrition facts about asparagus and additional recipes for students to share with their families. Each student will also receive a coupon for a free apple or banana from SaveMart grocery stores. Harvest of the Month is a monthly nutrition program provided by EGUSD Food and Nutrition Services. The purpose of the program is to motivate and empower students and families to increase consumption and enjoyment of a variety of fruits and vegetables and to engage in physical activity each day. Harvest of the Month funding is provided by a grant from the Network for a Healthy California and Kaiser Permanente.

Elementary school students enjoy a day with the Sacramento River Cats
On April 15, 300 lucky students from Isabelle Jackson, Samuel Kennedy, Herman Leimbach, Barbara Comstock Morse and John Reith elementary schools attended the 2009 AAA School Day at Raley Field. Students were selected to attend the event by reaching various perfect attendance goals set by each school. AAA School Day is sponsored by the Sacramento River Cats and U.S. Bank. At the event, students attended a pregame assembly - featuring the River Cats players and coaches at Raley Field focusing on the Triple A's: Academics, Attitude and Attendance. The assembly also discussed famous professional baseball player Jackie Robinson and his many accomplishments. Following the assembly, students participated in a special interactive activity before watching the River Cats take on the Portland Beavers. "John Reith students returned from the River Cats game with a great appreciation of the struggles and plight of Jackie Robinson and other players from the Negro Leagues," said Gordon Blackwood, principal at Reith. "Most of our students haven't been to a baseball game in a stadium. It gave them greater appreciation of the enormity of Jackie's accomplishments. They really enjoyed the game and many students said 'I'm a River Cats fan from now on.'"
In recognition of EGUSD's 50th Anniversary Celebration, the Sacramento River Cats will welcome the employees, students and parents of the district to Raley Field on May 15 for EGUSD Night. The River Cats sponsor a variety of community programs and events throughout the year. U-CAN Program helps students achieve the college dream
For many high school students, the thought of college can be just a dream. However, through the United College Action Network (U-CAN), many students are able to turn those dreams into a reality.
"U-CAN is a program that provides educational and outreach services to students in an effort to help increase the college going rate of African-American students," said Ralph Robles, head counselor for the district. "This program is the only community-based college recruitment organization that works exclusively with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)." Founded by Dr. Alan Rowe in 1988, U-CAN has serviced over 30,000 students, sent more than 7,000 students to college and has provided $29 million in scholarships. U-Can was created to respond to the problems associated with the high percentage of African-American college-eligible students who do not apply or submit applications to four-year colleges. Elk Grove Unified partnered with U-CAN in 1999. The Sacramento City and Twin Rivers school districts also have partnerships with U-CAN. Elk Grove Unified students have benefited greatly from the U-CAN program. The program provides financial aide assistance, personal counseling, parent/student meetings and preparation of student goals. Over the past nine years, 1,400 EGUSD seniors have applied to HBCUs and 1,180 have been accepted. EGUSD students have been awarded more than 366 scholarships - totaling over $10.5 million. The U-CAN Program is responsible for hosting many special events throughout the school year, such as the annual HBCU Fair, HBCU tour, picnics, parent workshops, leadership training and a scholarship banquet. The U-CAN program is open to any student who would like to join. Interested students should contact their school counselor, the U-CAN office at (916) 921-8226 or the U-CAN website at www.ucangotocollege.net for more information. To participate, interested students can fill out an application or survey form requesting services. Upon approval to the program, students will learn about transcripts, discuss college goals, practice writing a personal essay and learn the importance of letters of recommendation. Students will develop leadership skills that they will display at college fairs as U-CAN Ambassadors.

EGUSD a leader in California "green" cleaning
On Monday, April 20, Charles Mack Elementary School hosted a press conference highlighting the importance of using "green" cleaning products in schools.
The press conference highlighted AB 821, sponsored by California Assemblymember Julia Brownley, a bill that would require all K-12 schools with 50 or more students to switch to safer, environmentally preferable cleaning products if doing so will have no net increase in cost. The bill was heard in the Assembly Education Committee on April 22. "The Elk Grove Unified School District is committed to promoting green living in our schools and ensuring a healthy learning environment for our students and staff," EGUSD Superintendent Steven M. Ladd, Ed.D. said. "Our transition to green cleaning is just one way we continue to work towards saving our environment for future generations." Elk Grove Unified has become a leader in the state in spearheading the transition to green cleaning products. Currently, the district uses H2Orange2 - a hydrogen peroxide product that cleans a multitude of items, DFC 105 - a detergent-free carpet cleaner, P&G Proline Stripper - used for floor maintenance and a backpack vacuum cleaner - featuring a four-level filter to assist with indoor air quality and cleaning for health needs. The district plans to continue it's conversion to green products and is in the process of testing a variety of products. A new Active Ion spray bottle - which uses only water, meaning chemical free cleaning - is being tested. Tested areas that are cleaned using the spray bottle are tested with the ATP Meter as the EPA kill rates have not been published yet. In addition to the Active Ion spray bottle, striper pads that use only water, carpet extractors with low moisture levels and disposable biodegradable towels are also being tested for use in the district.
