An Extraordinary Opportunity for Garden Members

Study Weekend for the Passionate Gardener:

Tour of Gardens in the Brandywine Valley

                                     October 13-15

Please join Garden staff Dorthe Hviid, Elisabeth Cary and Molly Boxer for a three-day study weekend in the Brandywine Valley of Pennsylvania . . .including admission to the Perennial Plant Conference held at the legendary Scott Arboretum located on the campus of Swarthmore College. Attended by both professional and avid home gardeners, this is by far the most sophisticated, cutting-edge gardening conference held on the east coast.

Sit back and enjoy the ride - we have made all the arrangements (including time to relax!) to tickle the fancy of all gardeners. . .including:

  • Lunch and a tour of Hortulus Farm, the private garden of Renny Reynolds and Jack Staub - described as a garden with world-class charm and one of Pennsylvania's secret treasures.
  • A tour of Chanticleer Garden, called the most romantic, imaginative and exciting public garden in America.
  • A tour led by our own Garden staff of the Scott Arboretum, known as a "garden of ideas and suggestions."
  • A visit to the granddaddy of display gardens: Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square featuring 20 indoor and 20 outdoor gardens, opulent architecture, exquisite flowers and majestic trees.

For more information, please contact Elisabeth Cary, Director of Education, 413-298-3926, or visit the Garden's website by clicking here.

Grandma and Grandpa's Trees

grandma's tree - memorial

Shawn Samuelson Henry and her family gathered at the Garden last week to visit two very special trees - planted in 1996 to honor her grandparents, Marion and Huber Clark. Pictured at left with Director of Horticulture Dorthe Hviid are three generations of family members - ages 4 to 82 - who traveled for the occasion from North Carolina, Maine, Michigan and Pennsylvania to see the beautiful dogwood and beech trees. "That they are thriving trees means a great deal to us, as Marion and Huber  were such special people.  I like to think that they were smiling down on us as we admired the trees and danced through the Gardens," wrote Shawn of her visit.

Established in  the 1940's, the Garden's Commemorative Gift Program is a living tribute to the lives and achievements of family and friends. Currently over 58 individuals are honored with trees, plantings or memorial benches which grace the Garden for all to enjoy.

More information on this wonderful program is available by contacting  Dorthe Hviid.
