Horticulture Certificate Program Expands

We are pleased to offer an exciting new program beginning in September!

Gardeners can now obtain a Certificate in Sustainable Horticulture and Native Plant Garden Design through BBG's popular Horiculture Certificate Program. This certificate is becoming increasingly valuable for professional gardeners wishing to meet client demands for sustainable, easily maintained landscapes that focus on native plant selections especially suited to the Berkshires and neighboring tri-state areas.

The Garden's Horticulture Certificate Program is offered in partnership with  Berkshire Community College and includes certificates in the following:

Level I - Certificate in Horticulture
Requirements:  Completion of the seven Level I core courses and the garden practicum

Level II - Certificate in Garden Design Requirements: Completion of a Level I Certificate, four core Level II design courses and the final design project.

Level III - Advanced Certificates

Level III certificates focus on the individual needs of athe advanced student who has satisfied requirements in   Levels I and II.  Students can concentrate in horticulture or design or may choose a concentration in sustainable horticulture and native plant garden design.

Click here for more information on all three levels of certificate programs or attend an information session on Tuesday, August 30, 5 pm at the Garden.  Please RSVP by calling Elisabeth Cary, Education Director, 413-298-3926.

The academic season is upon us, and with late summer comes a time for gardeners to turn their thoughts toward professional development. Take this opportunity to invest in your future - programs begin September 6 and some, especially  the Level I Certificate in Horticulture, fill early.  Call now and expand your future in horticulture.

Plant Materials Needed

As the growing season winds down, please set aside attractive plant materials that when dried will have a second life on a wreath or holiday arrangement.  These include pine cones, fir cones, allium heads, birch bark, honey locust, beech nut, sweet gum and milk weed pods, thistle heads, and any flower that will dry well and hold up in arrangements.  Be sensitive in collecting - in the wild, be careful not to over harvest, and do not collect materials that are invasive or endangered.  Materials can be brought to the Garden in mid October for use in wreath making projects for the Garden's Holiday Marketplace December 3-4.
