Intern Joins ECO-CELL for Summer
Sarah Bloom

Name:  Sarah Bloom

Age:  20

Occupation:  Student of Indiana University-Bloomington's Individualized Major Program (IMP), Intern at ECO-CELL

Dream Job:  Manager of education department at zoo

Big Idea:  "When I visit zoos, I notice visitors seem confused about the animals on exhibit, and parents appear frustrated that they are unable to answer their children's questions.  They also seem concerned about the animals' welfare in such confined spaces.  My vision is to have interpreters at each exhibit area to relay information about enrichment programs at zoos, intriguing facts about the species in an exhibit area, and fascinating tidbits about the individual animals on display."

July 2010
Dear Conservation Partner:

I hope you had a nice 4th of July week-end with your friends and family. We all need a bit of down time in these very busy times.

Cell phone prices are fluctuating a bit due to the uncertainty in the U.S. and overseas economies. Be assured that the prices we pay will reflect those market changes. Don't believe the hype about other programs offering big bucks for certain models. The fact is that relatively few of these pricey models are ever collected in the condition that would garner these types of prices. Our prices are competetive and if you need to know what we can give you for a certain phone, just contact us

We have gone back to a once monthly pay schedule. Payments of $10 or more will be issued on the 30th of every month. If your organization didn't make the $10 mark but would like payment issued anyway, please let us know and we are happy to accomodate you.

Thank you all for your continued commitment to doing the next right thing.

Sincerely,

Cincinnati Zoo has gone gang busters
with their collection program led by Rhiannon Hoeweller and they have formed some great partnerships in their community - including big names like Starbucks, the Cincinnati Reds, Sam's Club and Gorilla Glue among others.

Under Rhiannon's direction, the Cncinnati Zoo has made their cell phone recycling program a critical part of their educational and outreach mission - their "Saving Species" campaign. They have even set up a micro-site to promote their program and their conservation efforts.

Zoo Atlanta "Goes Ape" to Raise Money and Awareness for DFGFI
Gorilla keepers at Silverback partner Zoo Atlanta create a cell phone recycling contest to benefit Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International

Zoo Atlanta logoThe goal is part of the overall Primate department, but the Gorilla department has a specific "green goal" of 500 cell phones for the Zoo Atlanta cell phone recycling program.  Each keeper is gathering cell phones and a tally is being kept as part of an effort to spur friendly competition amongst the keepers in the Gorilla department.  They have also recruited Zoo volunteers as part of the goal and they are helping to collect phones by attending local electronic recycling events to collect any cell phones that come in and also use this opportunity to share the story of Gorilla conservation and the work of Zoo Atlanta and Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI).

Keepers in the Gorilla department are Bernie Gregory, Jodi

Carrigan, Kristina Krickbaum, and Michele Dave. Jodi states "collecting the phones has proved to be easier than I thought and most people want to properly dispose of old cell phones but are not sure where or how.  This gives an opportunity to share the story of how products we buy and dispose of have an effect on animal population."
Paying it Forward
James MalouCongratulations to former ECO-CELL employee James Malou in his job helping refugees like himself

LEO Weekly, an alternative weekly newspaper in Louisville, did an article featuring the life and work of James Malou. If you remember, James just recently left ECO-CELL to take a job at Kentucky Refugee Ministries. James was one of the Southern Sudanese "Lost Boys" but now he is helping others find their way. Find out more about our extraordinary friend James and his inspiring story.

We miss you James but are proud to have had you for the time we did and are grateful for our friendship.
